Mohammad Hafeez struck a brilliant century as Pakistan beat England by six wickets in the first one-day international in Abu Dhabi.
Hafeez hit the winning run as he finished unbeaten on 102, after England had earlier been bowled out for 216.
The tourists were left to rue two batting collapses - slipping first to 14 for three and then losing five wickets for 33 runs in the middle overs as Pakistan's spinners applied good pressure.
A century stand between captain Eoin Morgan, who top-scored with 76, and James Taylor, gave England hope, and Chris Woakes dug in for a gutsy 33 late in the innings to ensure the bowlers had something to work with.
Reece Topley produced a fine opening spell as he finished with 3-26, the left-armer reducing the designated hosts to 41 for three with his first ODI wickets.
Both Pakistan openers fell cheaply, and Younus Khan - who earlier announced his retirement from the ODI game - departed for nine after tamely chipping straight to Adil Rashid at mid-on.
Hafeez and Shoaib Malik added 70 for the fourth wicket as England toiled, before Moeen Ali made the breakthrough by having Malik caught at midwicket for 26.
A couple of big lbw calls went Pakistan's way, but in truth Hafeez and Babar Azam were rarely troubled as they sauntered home with 38 balls to spare.
The 21-year-old Azam showed that the future for Pakistan post-Younus could well be bright as he emphatically cleared the rope four times in making an unbeaten run-a-ball 62.
Earlier Mohammad Irfan pegged back Jason Roy's off stump with the second ball of the match and Joe Root also fell for a duck after being trapped lbw by Anwar Ali in the next over.
Alex Hales tamely edged to Younus at slip to depart for 10, before Morgan and Taylor played England back into the contest.
The pair added 133 at a good rate, although Taylor was lucky to see Azhar Ali fumble a catch at mid-on off Malik.
The off-spinner struck with the next delivery as one spun and caught Morgan's outside edge, and that sparked a slump from which England struggled to recover.
Jos Buttler was run out for one after being called through by Taylor for a single which wasn't there, and the Nottinghamshire man swiftly followed when he clipped Malik to Azhar for 60.
Moeen hit Yasir Shah to midwicket where Azam took a stunning one-handed catch, and Irfan returned to snare Adil Rashid.
Woakes and David Willey saw England past 200 before the latter fell trying to hit out at Irfan, who finished with 3-35, and Woakes was run out trying to retrieve the strike from Topley in the final over.
