Hogan takes five but Gloucestershire win by 5 runs under the DLS Method

Career-best figures of 5/17 by Michael Hogan restricted Gloucestershire to 150/9 after being put in to bat by Glamorgan in their NatWest T20 Blast match at The SSE SWALEC, but it was not enough to win the game as rain interrupted Glamorgan’s innings on 32/2 after five overs, as the visitors won by 5 runs under the DLS Method.

With Timm van der Gugten back in the side having missed the victory on Sunday against the Kent Spitfires, the Dutchman opened the bowling to Michael Klinger and Phil Mustard with the latter surviving a very sharp chance in the gully as he carved a ball from Michael Hogan just out of Andrew Salter’s grasp. He celebrated by off-driving van der Gugten for four followed by a six over long-on.

Klinger then pulled de Lange for four before Mustard on-drove the paceman for another boundary. Klinger greeted the introduction of Graham Wagg into the attack by upper-cutting him for four but he departed to Craig Meschede’s first delivery as he miscued a pull to Andrew Salter at deep square-leg.

Mustard responded by drilling a full toss from Meschede over the ropes at long-on, followed next over by a reverse-sweep for four against Salter. Ian Cockbain began with an on-drive for four against Meschede whilst Mustard peppered the boundary boards again as he off-drove the all-rounder before completing a 42-ball fifty by on-driving Salter for six.

Cockbain also pulled the spinner for six before lofting Meschede to Hogan at long-off as Gloucestershire lost their second wicket on 98. Five runs later Mustard also departed as he miscued a sweep against Colin Ingram and skied a catch to Salter at deep mid-wicket.

Kieran Noema-Barnett then swept Ingram for four before lofting him straight for six and four from successive balls. However, he then drove Hogan to Donald at long-off. 129/4 became 131/5 as two balls later Hogan bowled Jack Taylor before Perera drilled the last ball of a three-wicket over to Miller at long-off.

With the first ball of his final over he bowled George Hankins before to the third he combined with Cooke to run out Matt Taylor. Benny Howell then struck him for four to third man but he perished to the last ball of the innings as he upper-cut the seamer to Ingram at short third man as Gloucestershire ended on 150/9 and Hogan on career-best figures of 5/17 and the third best in the Club's history.

Donald then struck the first three deliveries from Matt Taylor to mid-wicket, fine-leg and backward square-leg, before scampering a series of singles with Rudolph. But with the total on 19 Donald spooned a drive against David Payne into the hands of Howell at short extra-cover.

Ingram began with a fierce slash over point for four as steady drizzle started to fall whilst Rudolph steered Thisara Perera through point for four before the Sri Lankan bowled the Glamorgan captain with the last ball of the over and with the total on 32 and five behind the D/L/S par score. A re-start was planned for 9.15pm with a revised target of 114, meaning Glamorgan needed to score 82 from nine overs, but the precipitation returned preventing any further play with Gloucestershire winning by five runs. Ironically had the second wicket not fallen it would have been a tie.
