I just threw myself straight into it - Root

Batsman Billy Root arrived at Glamorgan from Nottinghamshire in October 2018 after signing a two-year deal with the club.

After settling in quickly with his new surroundings in Wales he enjoyed a successful first season with the Welsh county topping the run charts for the club in the Royal London Cup and striking a career-best in the County Championship.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I first came down to Wales,” admitted Root.

“There’s a huge difference between Trent bridge and here but I was excited and I just threw myself straight into it and got stuck in.

“From the moment I first came to the last day of the season I just loved it and everyone involved has just been amazing.”

Standout performances in the 2019 season

Root put in a number of strong performances in his first season with the club, notably hitting the ground running with a century on his County Championship debut for the club against Northants and followed it up in the return fixture at Wantage Road with a double-hundred.

He also finished with 386 runs in the Royal London Cup and hit a century against Surrey - the second List A hundred of his career.

“I thought I did really well in the Royal London Cup. I was most proud of that because it was my first chance in a team to have more responsibility. I was told ‘you’re going to bat four’ and quite a lot of the time that was the most important part of the innings and to take that on and to deal with it like I did was very pleasing.

“The double-hundred was a bit different. It was a bit lucky because I got dropped first ball but people say you still have to get them and that’s what I did. I was given a big chance on nought and thankfully I didn’t give another one.

Goals in 2020

Glamorgan enjoyed a much-improved Royal London Cup campaign last year and narrowly missed out on promotion to Division One in the County Championship.

Although results in the Vitality Blast were less impressive, Root is confident the Welsh county can reach the knockout stages of both white-ball competitions and gain promotion in the four-day format with the talent in the squad.

“I think this year we want to target being a little bit better in the County Championship, while qualification in the Royal London Cup and the Vitality Blast are always a goal.

“An improvement in T20 has to happen not just because we had poor results last year but because of the quality in the squad it we have. We need to figure out how to get the best out of each other by the first game so we can get on a roll.”
