Is Glamorgan’s County Championship task more difficult this season?

Only one side will be promoted from the Specsavers County Championship Division Two this season. So the question is: can Glamorgan top the pile in 2016?

The move has been made amid sweeping changes to the county system for the 2017 season, with just eight teams in Division One and ten in Division One.

Though this season’s lower tier boasts county heavyweights such as Sussex and Worcestershire, Glamorgan are targeting promotion.

Head Coach Robert Croft believes fewer teams going up makes his job a bit clearer.

He said: “It’s one place less going up, but it makes things clearer in terms of what we want to achieve.

“Last season we were on course for half the campaign and just dropped off towards the end.”

Croft has strengthened his squad, brining in the likes of Timm van der Gugten, Nick Selman and the permanent signature of Craig Meschede.

He added: “We have more resources this year particularly in the bowling department which will take a little weight off and gives us the opportunity to rotate.

“The flexibility is there now. The players are also a year older and have a little more experience.”

Glamorgan’s County Championship campaign begins on Sunday versus Leicestershire at The SSE SWALEC, starting at 11am.
