It has been good for us to play different sides and really test ourselves - Maynard

Head coach Matt Maynard was pleased with his side’s overall form during this year’s County Championship despite results tailing off during the final few weeks of the season.

The Welsh county finished in 3rd place in Group Three and put in strong performances against Yorkshire and Lancashire who ended in the top two in the group.

Maynard was also positive about the new County Championship format which pit his side against stronger opposition than the two-division format.

“We had an opportunity to finish higher but didn’t play well enough in the last four games. I think the concept of this has been terrific, the county championship being won in the last session of the last day in dramatic style at Edgbaston is great for the game,” said Maynard.

"Whether we maintain this format, who knows, but it’s been good for us to play different sides and really test ourselves.

“I was impressed with the fight we showed against Lancashire, we beat them and they’ve come second so we can take great pride in a lot of our games this year but in other games, one session has absolutely put us out of the game and it doesn’t matter how much fight we show after that, we’ve got to show more resilience in those moments.”

A number of Glamorgan’s batsman enjoyed record personal seasons, with Maynard particularly effusive of David Lloyd who completed his first season at the top of the order with a century against Surrey and set a positive tone opening the batting throughout the campaign.

“The pleasing aspect from the batting side is that there have been three guys who’ve had their best ever seasons in Chris Cooke, Kiran Carlson and David Lloyd.

"David was asked to do an unfamiliar job at the top of the order and he’s done it terrifically well. We need to find him a partner and establish a strong opening partnership for Glamorgan for a number of years, and hopefully Eddie Byrom will fight with Joe Cooke to try to establish that position alongside David.

“It’s great to see that David is learning (as an opener) but he’s got to convert those 60s and 70s.”

The Welsh county won their first silverware in 17 years with the Royal London Cup triumph at Trent Bridge with Maynard taking great ‘pride’ in the victory led by Carlson and acting head coach David Harrison.

“We have enormous pride in the one-day trophy, a fantastic team effort by the guys with Kiran Carlson and Dave Harrison leading that group, they did a great job and some of the boys took opportunities really well.

"Kiran’s innings in the final was one of the finest one-day innings I’ve seen, under quite a bit of pressure he played some exquisite shots of high quality.

In the Vitality Blast, Maynard believes the loss of key players to Covid and the lack of form of others resulted in a disappointing campaign where Glamorgan finished bottom of the South Group with just three wins.

“T20s, we were in with a decent shout heading in but we lost Marnus Labuschagne and Nick Selman, who played well in a couple of games, to Covid for four games, and we never recovered.

"The form of two other key players, Colin Ingram and Chris Cooke, who’d been phenomenal in that format over the years, they both struggled this year.

"When you’re in the heat of it, it’s very hard to get out of that. It’s easy for the coaches to say ‘play a bit more freely’ but I know as a player myself that you go through self-doubt and it makes the game much more difficult.”
