Glamorgan’s hopes of a quarter-final place remain on hold after the Welsh county dramatically collapsed at Hove, slipping from 70/2 to 88 all out in the space of 30 balls as Tymal Mills completed a hat-trick and Rashid Khan took 3/9 as the Sussex Sharks defeated the Welsh county by 98 runs at Hove in their contest in the Vitality Blast.
The Welsh county named an unchanged side from Sunday with Ruaidhri Smith opening the bowling to Phil Salt and Harry Finch, with the latter lofting the seamer over wide long-on for six before sweeping Andrew Salter for four. But Salt perished attempting a boundary himself against the spinner as he holed out to Aneurin Donald at long-on. 13/1 saw the in-form Laurie Evans make his way to the middle as Finch off-drove and nurdled Smith for four. But Timm van der Gugten removed Finch who miscued another ambitious drive with Michael Hogan pouching the skier at mid-on.
25/2 saw Delray Rawlins join Evans and the youngster was quickly into his stride as he on-drove the Dutchman before doing the same for six against Hogan. The young Bermudan then square-drove van der Gugten for four as the Sharks ended the powerplay on 48/2. Rawlins found the ropes again as he on-drove Salter.
Graham Wagg entered the attack in the ninth over and was pulled for six by Evans, before Rawlins swatted Meschede to the mid-wicket boards via the hands of a Glamorgan fielder . Evans then fiercely on-drove Wagg for four, but later in the over the all-rounder ended Rawlins’ cameo as he spliced a pull high into Cooke’s gloves. 85/3 then became 89/4 as Tom Bruce lofted Salter to Donald at long-off.
With Michael Burgess as his new partner, Evans pulled Salter for six to bring up the Sussex hundred before Burgess unfurled a lofted drive for six over mid-wicket against Smith, followed by a streaky four to long-leg off the under edge of his bat. He then dil-scooped Hogan over the keepers head for four before Evans harpooned the bowler over mid-wicket for six en route to a 43-ball fifty.
Evans celebrated by squirting Wagg through point for four before lofting him over extra-cover for another boundary. Burgess also dil-scooped van der Gugten for four before hoisting him into the Pavilion for six. Evans also pulled van der Gugten for four before Burgess on-drove Wagg for four. But with his penultimate ball Wagg removed Burgess as Salter took a good diving catch at mid-wicket. Jofra Archer edged the last ball of Wagg’s quota for four before launching Hogan over long-off for six, He then edged the penultimate ball for four to third man before hoisting the last ball over long-on for another maximum as the Sharks ended on 186/5.
Donald and Meschede began the chase with the former sweeping Briggs for four and six as Glamorgan plundered 14 from the first over. Tymal Mills delivered the second over with Meschede straight-driving him for four, before doing the same to Archer. The all-rounder then clipped Archer to the boards at mid-wicket before a lofted on-drive for six almost into the BBC Radio Wales commentary area.
After Meschede clipped Mills for three, Donald cut him over point for six before a single against Khan saw Glamorgan to the 50-mark in the fifth over. But next ball the Afghani spinner bowled Meschede. Ingram nearly edged his first delivery into the keeper’s gloves before getting a single, but next over he pulled a ball from Archer to Finch at mi-on as Kiran Carlson made his way to the middle with Glamorgan on 51/2.
A series of singles then followed before Carlson lofted Briggs over extra-cover for four before scything him through gully for four. But two balls later another square-drive saw him acrobatically caught at point by Evans. 70/3 then became 71/4 as Donald holed out at deep extra cover, and three runs later David Lloyd departed l.b.w. to Briggs as Wagg joined Cooke with 113 needed off 60 balls.
Cooke edged Khan for four before a series of singles but with the total on 87 Wagg pulled Khan to Rawlins at deep mid-wicket. One run later Khan bowled Cooke before Mills returned and immediately bowled Salter as Glamorgan nosedived to 88/8. But this was not the end of the drama as next ball Mills had van der Gugten caught behind, before bowling Hogan to complete a hat-trick as Glamorgan were dismissed for 88 - their lowest all out total in the competition - having lost their last five wickets for one run in seven balls.
