Northeast and Cooke sign new one-year deals

Glamorgan Cricket are delighted to announce that Sam Northeast and Chris Cooke have both signed one-year contract extensions with the Club.

Batter Northeast’s deal will now run until the end of the 2025 season, while Cooke is under contract until 2024.

Northeast was a huge success during his first season with the Welsh county. The 32-year-old amassed 1,990 runs across all three formats and won the Glamorgan Player of the Year Trophy.

He famously broke Steve James’ Club record for the highest individual first-class score when he hit 410 not out against Leicestershire and just two months later smashed the Club’s highest-ever individual List A score when he made an unbeaten 177 against Worcestershire at New Road.

Wicket-keeper Cooke joined Glamorgan in 2012 and has been a mainstay of the side across all three formats.

Cooke struck 840 runs in the LV= County Championship last summer, a career-best aggregate for the attacking right-hander. He also shared in a Club record stand of 461 with Northeast at Grace Road, though his 191* was second fiddle to the quadruple centurion.

A stand-out performer for the Club for many years, his first-class average sits above 40 in red-ball cricket, and his destructive finishing capabilities make him one of the most dangerous white-ball batters on the circuit.

On signing his extension, Northeast, said: “I am delighted to sign with Glamorgan for another year.”

“Last season was a great success for me personally, and the way everyone at the Club and the fans have accepted me has been a humbling experience.

“If we can build on the good foundations we set last year, there is no reason why we can’t get promoted to Division One of the Championship, compete on all three fronts and bring some silverware back to Cardiff.

“For me, it is just about contributing to the team as best as I can, whether by scoring runs or passing on any knowledge I have. I can’t wait for the next few years here in Wales, and I can’t wait to get back out in front of the Glamorgan faithful.”

Cooke, said “Glamorgan has been my home for over a decade now and I am delighted to extend my time with Club”

“I have achieved a lot during my time here but I do feel like there is some unfinished business, especially with us being so close to promotion last year. It wasn’t meant to be last season but we are chomping at the bit to have another crack.

“We all want to win trophies, and I think 2023 is shaping up to be a year to remember. I hope that I can play a small part in bringing that success to the Club this year and moving forwards.”

Mark Wallace, said: “It is brilliant to have both Sam and Chris tied down to the Club for the foreseeable future.”

“We all know about Sam’s quality; it was why we were desperate to bring him in. But even by his standards, his exploits last season will live long in the memory of every Glamorgan fan. We hope he can emulate it next year and push us to promotion.

“Chris has been a magnificent servant to the Club for many years, to average 40 and keep to the standard that he does is exceptional. Not many keepers can boast a record like his, myself included.

“To have them both committing their future to the Club is wonderful news, and their qualities both on and off the field will be invaluable as the Club looks to push on over the next few years.”
