Glamorgan return on Thursday to Trent Bridge - the scene of their triumph last summer in the final of the Royal London Cup last – for their first Championship match on Nottinghamshire soil since 2007, with the four-day contest scheduled to start at 1100 on April 14th (writes Andrew Hignell)
The two teams last met in the LV+ Insurance County Championship in 2017 at Sophia Gardens when a superb stand of 226 for the sixth wicket by Colin Ingram and Chris Cooke helped Glamorgan save the game after the Welsh county had been forced to follow-on by the visitors. It was fifteen years ago that the two teams met at Trent Bridge, in a contest in May 2007 at Trent Bridge when Nottinghamshire won by an innings with both Jason Gallian and Samit Patel making hundreds. Later that summer, Nottinghamshire visited Swansea with Glamorgan recording a 55-run victory as Robert Croft scored 115 and James Harris 87, before Dean Cosker completed a nine-wicket match haul.
In all, Glamorgan have played 49 Championship matches at Trent Bridge, with their most recent win at the Nottingham ground coming in June 1998 when the Welsh county won a rain-affected contest by 46 runs. Steve James posted a first innings century before Darren Thomas, with four wickets, led the Glamorgan response after a couple of forfeitures.
Steve also holds the record for the highest Championship score in Nottinghamshire making 235 at Worksop in 1996. As far as the bowling records are concerned, off-spinner Jim McConnon still holds the record for the best figures in an innings against the East Midlands side, with figures of 8-36 at Trent Bridge in 1953. As far as the best match figures for Glamorgan at Trent Bridge are concerned, these remain the return of 13-106 recorded by fellow off-spinner Rodney Ontong in the contest at Nottingham in 1985.
After Andrew Salter reached the milestone of 100 first-class wickets for Glamorgan during the draw with Durham at Cardiff, several other members of the 1st XI squad are approaching career landmarks. The match at Trent Bridge will be Kiran Carlson’s 50th first-class appearance for the Welsh county and Chris Cooke’s 99th, with the wicket-keeper having made 349 runs for once out in his last three Championship innings. Timm van der Gugten also has a personal milestone looming with the Dutch international having taken 194 wickets in all first-class cricket, as well as scoring 948 runs.
