Promotion spot still on the line as final match looms

Head coach Matt Maynard has named a 13-man squad for Glamorgan’s final match of the Specsavers County Championship campaign against Durham at Emirates Riverside.

There is one change to the squad which recorded a resounding win against Leicestershire last week, with Marchant de Lange returning from a quad strain and replacing Ruaidhri Smith who suffered an abductor injury during the victory.

With a potential 24 points up for grabs, Glamorgan sit in fourth place in Division Two, 16 points behind Gloucestershire in third with the top three sides all gaining promotion to Division One.

Gloucestershire meanwhile face Northamptonshire, who are a further five points in front in second, knowing a draw will likely be enough to secure their promotion.

“Obviously you would say that Gloucestershire are favourites from where they are, a win ahead, but we are going up there (Durham) with a sniff," said Maynard.

“Our result now means [Durham] can’t get promotion, but they still want to finish as high as they can in the league and they will come hard at us. They have got a great bunch of bowlers.

“Thankfully the club is allowing us to go up a day early. We travel up on Saturday, that will allow us good recovery progress from a seven-hour bus journey, and then practice well on Sunday before the game on starts on Monday, so we are giving ourselves the best possible chance.”

If Glamorgan end on the same number of points as either Gloucestershire or Northamptonshire, then it would be sufficient for promotion due to fewer losses than Gloucestershire, and more head-to-head points than Northamptonshire in their two meetings. With this in mind, captain Chris Cooke is not giving up.

“It’s great to go up to Durham with a sniff and know we can control what we can control, and make sure we get as many points as we can and we shall see what happens down in Bristol," added Cooke.

"We just have to do what we have been doing, we got maximum batting points this game (against Leicestershire) so there should be a bit of confidence that we can do the same again.”

“As management you have to keep an eye on what’s going on, and checking a few weather apps but, like I said you just have to control what you can control.

"It will be silly if we are worrying about things in Bristol, we have to take care of what we can do in Durham.”

Glamorgan squad vs Durham: Cooke*+, Selman, Brathwaite, Lloyd, Patel, Root, Cullen, vd Gugten, de Lange, Carey, Hogan, Salter and Wagg.
