Rain washes out contest at Old Trafford

19 Aug 2015 | Matches
Lancashire Lightning were 68/0 when rain stopped play after 8.4 overs of their final group match in the Royal London One-Day Cup against Glamorgan at The Emirates Old Trafford. No further play was possible as the game ended as a "No Result".
The Welsh county made one change to their side from the one that lost on Monday against Middlesex at Lord's, with Graham Wagg replacing Craig Meschede who was rested ahead of the LV=County Championship match on Friday. The Lancashire Lightning started the contest in fifth place and, as one of four clubs on seven points, still harbouring ambitions of a quarter-final berth in the 50 overs competition.

The weather though looked like literally dampening their chances as rain started to fall after the toss was made at 1.30pm, but it eased to allow play to start on time at 2pm, but the heavy cloud cover meant that the floodlights were on as Wagg opened the bowling. Karl Brown cover drove the last ball of the opening over as the drizzle returned, but after two deliveries of Ruaidhri Smith's first over, the precipitation intensified and the players left the field with the home side on 5/0 after eight deliveries.

The rain eased after fifty minutes and plans were made for a resumption at 3.30pm as the contest was trimmed to 42 overs. Ashwell Prince duly struck the first ball to fine-leg for four but after a maiden from David Lloyd the heavens opened again as the umpires took the players off again with Lancashire on 9/0 after three overs.

After another couple of hours rain, play resumed at 6.30pm as a 23 overs contest as Graham Wagg switched to the Statham End and was cut for four by Prince, who then flicked the next two deliveries to fine-leg for further boundaries. The former South African batsman then harpooned Smith high over mid-wicket for a massive six before Andrew Salter and Dewi Penrhyn Jones entered the attack. The latter was swatted over extra cover and backward point for successive fours by Brown, before the next ball was glanced to fine-leg for another four.

Kieran Bull then replaced Penrhyn Jones and was biffed for six by Prince over mid-wicket but the drizzle which had been falling then turned into steady rain and the players left the field again with Lancashire on 68/0 from 8.4 overs. Despite a brief lull in the rain, it was still raining at 8.15pm when the umpires abandoned play.
