All-rounder David Lloyd celebrated his return to the first team with two wickets and three catches as Glamorgan bowled Kent out for 302, before reaching 18/1 at the close.
Lloyd, playing in his first Specsavers County Championship match since facing Durham at Chester-le-Street in June, took the key wicket of Joe Denly for 152, as he finished with figures of 2/37.
"It's nice to be back in the fold,"said Lloyd. "We started off really well but after lunch the wicket seemed to flatten a little but Denly's was one of the best knocks I've seen for a while.
"It's pleasing to pick up a couple of wickets and being in the slips for the first time, it was good to catch three so hopefully I can continue doing that.
"It was unfortunate to lose Nick early in our reply tonight, but Connor and Jack got their heads down and got us though that tough period before stumps.
"Hopefully we can have a good start tomorrow, but we need to get our heads down. It's all about seeing off the new ball in the morning and getting though the first hour.
"There's still a bit of life in it and driving is quite a risky shot early on. We need to take our time, get through and build from there.
"It's been a frustrating season for me personally with the start of the season I had, then getting injured, so hopefully I can finish off with a few runs and wickets, and build for next year."
