Saturday’s One-Day International between England and Australia at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff saw a number of batting records being created.
England’s final score of 342-8 in their 50 overs was the highest-ever team total at the ground in international cricket, beating India’s 331-7 against South Africa in 2013. England’s previous highest in One-Day Internationals had been 324-7, made against Sri Lanka in 2016.
Before yesterday’s match the highest individual score in the previous 23 One-Day Internationals at Sophia Gardens had been 114, made by Shikhar Dhawan for India against South Africa in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and by Shakab-al-Hasan for Bangladesh against New Zealand in their 2017 ICC Champions Trophy encounter in the Welsh capital.
But this record for the highest individual score was erased, firstly by Man-of-the-Match Jason Roy who made an imperious 120 to become the first English batsman to score a century in an ODI at Cardiff, before Shaun Marsh made a majestic 131 as he also became the first current Glamorgan player to reach three figures in any international contest at Sophia Gardens in addition to passing the personal landmark of 2000 runs in One-Day Internationals. His efforts though were not enough to see Australia to victory as England won by 38 runs to go 2-0 up in the five-match series.
