A combative 72 from 30 balls by Corey Anderson plus a return of 4/25 by Max Waller saw Somerset end Glamorgan’s winning sequence as the West Country side won by 29 runs in their Vitality Blast game against at Taunton.
There was overnight rain and further precipitation this morning at Taunton, delaying the start until 3.15pm with Glamorgan fielding the same side which won on Friday evening at Cardiff against Hampshire, before Colin Ingram won the toss and opted to bowl first with Ruaidhri Smith opening the bowling to Johann Myburgh and Steve Davies, with the latter off-driving Smith for four.
But Michael Hogan struck with his first ball as Myburgh clipped a ball high in the air to Aneurin Donald at deep square-leg. 7/1 saw Peter Trego join Davies who cover drove Hogan for a second four. Trego then drilled Smith to long-on for four before Davies square-drove van der Gugten for four before on-driving the Dutchman for another boundary. Trego then flat-batted Hogan for a straight four but he then holed out after lofting van der Gugten high in the air to deep mid-wicket where Donald held onto another skier.
With Somerset on 52/2, James Hildreth announced his arrival by threading a ball from Craig Meschede through the covers for four, Davies, on 31 then had a life as he was dropped at square-leg swatting Andrew Salter. But it did not prove expensive as two balls later he scythed the spinner to backward point where Smith completed the catch with the home side on 68/3.
With Tom Abell as his new partner, Hildreth lofted Salter over wide long-on for six, but with the total on 86, Abell swatted the spinner to Smith on the point boundary. After a series of singles, Hildreth then brought up the hundred by pulling Salter for six before clipping Meschede to deep square-leg for four and next ball straight-driving him for six.
Corey Anderson also clubbed Meschede for four to mid-wicket before hoisting van der Gugten for six over fine-leg, but the Dutchman made amends as Hildreth attempted to paddle him, only for Chris Cooke to complete a superb one-handed catch high above his head. 126/5 saw Lewis Gregory make his way to the middle and he began by drilling van der Gugten to square-leg for four.
Anderson cleared the ropes again as he pulled Wagg for six, before Donald nearly produced a one-handed catch on the boundary edge as Gregory straight drove Wagg for six. The home captain then flat-batted Wagg for four over extra-cover to bring up the 150 before almost driving Hogan into Carlson’s hands at mid-wicket.
Anderson’s lusty fusillade continued as he lofted Wagg over long-on for six followed by a flat-batted swipe to mid-wicket for four to complete the fifty stand from 20 balls. He then reached his own half-century form 21 balls by driving Hogan straight for six. Two balls later Gregory scythed a ball to short third man where Meschede pouched the skier. Anderson responded by pulling Hogan for a pair of sixes as Somerset the 200-mark before clipping Wagg to the mid-wicket ropes. But to the penultimate ball he edged Wagg into Cooke’s gloves before Jamie Overton swiped the bowler into Ingram’s hands at mid-off as the West Country side finished on 210/8.
Donald and Meschede began the chase with the former straight-driving Max Waller for four but he then swatted a full toss from Jerome Taylor straight to Overton at deep square-leg. Ingram responded by late-cutting Taylor for four before upper-cutting Overton for six over extra-cover. He then top-edged a pull for four against Overton before drilling the bowler through mid-off for four. But he then pulled a ball into the hands of sub fielder Craig Overton at deep backward square-leg and departed for 19 with his side on 25/2 after three action packed overs.
Meschede responded by straight driving Overton for four before nurdling Taylor to the vacant ropes at third man. Carlson also lofted Taylor over cover for four to bring up the 50 before straight-driving van der Merwe for four . Meschede did the same to Waller but later in the over, with the total on 64, Carlson swept the leg-spinner to the sub fielder at mid-wicket. Meschede then pulled and off-drove successive balls from Roelof van der Merwe for six but next over he was well caught at long-on by Jamie Overton as Meschede attempted to straight drive Waller with the total on 83.
David Lloyd drilled Gregory for four over cover but then gloved a catch into Davies’ gloves as Glamorgan lost their fifth wicket on 91. It then became 94/6 as a superb stop and throw at mid-off by Gregory saw Wagg run out at the bowler’s end. Cooke then glanced Overton for four to take Glamorgan into three figures. Salter also pulled Overton for six before Cooke swatted him to fine-leg for four.
Salter then lofted van der Merwe over cover for four as the task became 91 off 36, before harpooning Gregory over mid-wicket for six. Cooke also swatted the home captain over third man for four before Salter pulled Waller into Craig Overton’s hands at deep mid-wicket. Cooke responded by plonking the leg-spinner over mid-wicket for six before holing out to Overton to give Waller his fourth wicket and the sub fielder his fourth catch.
Next over Taylor re-arranged Smith’s stumps before van der Gugten lofted Gregory for six. Hogan also pulled Overton for four as well pulling Gregory for six. A flurry of singles followed before van der Gugten pulled Taylor for six in the final over as Glamorgan ended on 181/9.
