Glamorgan declared on 149-8 on the third day of their pre-season friendly against Somerset at Taunton with the Welsh county leading by 201 runs. When the game ended shortly before 4pm, the home side were 63-1.
Teatime Update
When play resumed at 1400, Glamorgan had a lead of 178 runs with Sam Northeast and James Harris at the crease. Northeast secured a trio of fours through point and backward point before lofting Kasey Aldridge over extra-cover to complete a 60-ball half-century. Harris then received a brute of a ball from Davey which he edged into the gloves of James Rew as Timm van der Gugten made his way to the middle. It proved to be a brief stay at the crease because on 56 Northeast was bowled by Sonny Baker whereupon Glamorgan declared.
Andy Umeed and Steve Davies began Somerset’s second innings with the former straight driving and square-driving Podmore before getting a thick outside-edge to a delivery from the seamer which flew just out of the reach of Kiran Carlson at third slip. Davies began with a pair of off-drives before Umeed flicked Podmore to the short boundary on the leg-side. Davies then outside-edged successive balls from McIlroy through the slip cordon for four before Umeed edged Harris to the third man boundary.
Dan Douthwaite struck in his opening over as Umeed top-edged a pull into the hands of Billy Root at mid-wicket. 57-1 saw Lewis Goldsworthy join Davies for four more overs before rain started to fall again and the players shook hands as the game ended in a draw.
Lunchtime Update
Once again, overnight rain in the West Country delayed the start until 12noon with lunch being rescheduled from 1330-1400. Resuming on their overnight score of 66-2, and with Colin Ingram having retired, it was Kiran Carlson who was Sam Northeast’s partner as Kasey Aldridge and Jack Brooks resumed the bowling duties under the Taunton floodlights.
Each batter secured early fours as they nurdled balls to the ropes at third man. But with the total on 78, Carlson edged Jack Brooks to Ben Green at fourth slip as Andre Salter made his way to the middle. Salter began with a firm cover drive and on-drive against Brooks whilst Northeast played a sumptuous cover drive against Aldridge. But with the total on 94 Salter edged Brookes to third slip as Dan Douthwaite re-appeared for a second knock. He began with an on-driven four against Craig Overton before Sam Northeast caressed the bowler through the covers for another boundary.
Douthwaite then opened his shoulders to pull Aldridge for six but Josh Davey returned to the attack and found the edge of the all-rounder’s bat with James Rew completing the catch shortly before the rains returned and sent the players scurrying from the field.
