STAT ATTACK - Andy Gorvin takes 8/31 against Hampshire 2nd XI at Newport

2 Sep 2024 | Cricket

Andy Gorvin took 8/31 today in Glamorgan’s Second Eleven Championship match against their counterparts from Hampshire at Spytty Park in Newport, and came within one wicket of taking the best-ever innings return in the competition in the Club’s history. (writes Andrew Hignell)

After James Harris had removed Ali Orr in the fifth over, Andy struck in the 13th over as Joe Eckland departed l.b.w to the all-rounder– the first of eight wickets in succession – until Zain ul Hassan removed Eddie Jack in the 55th over as Hampshire - the county of Andy's birth and for whom he played for their Academy - were dismissed for a paltry 137.

Based on the Second Eleven scorebooks which have survived since the start of the competition in 1959, these are the joint fourth-best figures in the Club's history. The list below shows the three bowlers who have recorded better figures:

9-90 Chris Sketchley v Somerset at Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd, 1996.
8-17 Lawrence Williams v Northamptonshire at Barry Island, 1974.
8-21 Kazi Szymanski v Sussex at Spytty Park, Newport, 2018.
8-31 Steve Barwick v Nottinghamshire at Caythorpe , 1986.
8-31 Andy Gorvin v Hampshire at Spytty Park, Newport, 2024.

If Andy takes five or more wickets in the second innings, he could break the record set by Jeff Jones for the match figures by a Glamorgan bowler in the Second Eleven Championship with the left-arm fast bowler returning an analysis of 13/65 against Surrey 2nd XI at Margam in 1964.
