Yesterday at New Road, Asa Tribe became the fourth Glamorgan batter to carry their bat and score a century in the One-Day Cup for Glamorgan as he made an unbeaten 122 against the Worcestershire Rapids facing, in all, 125 balls and hitting a dozen fours as well as one six. (writes Andrew Hignell)
As the list below shows, Sam Northeast, Jacques Rudolph and Eddie Byrom have also achieved the field of carrying their bat and scoring a hundred in the One-Day Cup competition since it was inaugurated in 2014:
177* out of 356-3 SA Northeast v Worcestershire at New Road, 2022
169* out of 330-3 JA Rudolph v Sussex at Hove, 2014
123* out of 278-2 EJ Byrom v Notts Outlaws at Neath, 2024
122* out of 297-7 AM Tribe v Worcestershire at New Road, 2025
Over the years, a number of legendary Glamorgan batters have also achieved the feat of carrying their bat in List A matches for Glamorgan, including Alan Jones, Steve James, and Hugh Morris. The latter was also involved in a most curious instance of carrying his bat, when he made an unbeaten 16 out of the team’s modest total of 83 in their second round contest in the Nat West Trophy against Yorkshire at Headingley in 1987.
Hugh was one of only two batters to get into double figures, with the other being Greg Thomas who, batting at number seven in the order, struck 33 off 20 balls with 6 fours and a six. Hugh’s innings, however, carried the stamp of an aspirant England batter, as well as displaying his indomitable spirit on a most unpredictable surface at the Leeds ground and led to John Billot, the long-standing cricket writer of the Western Mail newspaper saying “his innings finds a niche in Glamorgan’s cricket history. It was perhaps the most memorable sixteen runs – with as many bruises – of its kind by any Glamorgan player!”
Thankfully, Asa’s innings yesterday against the Worcestershire Rapids was on a more trustworthy surface at New Road and, unlike Hugh, he did not have to deal with a capricious bounce as he posted his career-best score in List A cricket, going past his previous best, achieved when playing for Jersey in 2022/23, when he made an unbeaten 115 against Papua New Guinea at Windhoek.
