England are sweating on the fitness of Ben Stokes for the second time in the summer, after the allrounder limped out of the Second Investec Test at Old Trafford with a pulled calf.
Stokes, who missed three Tests earlier in the summer after jarring his knee at Lord's against Sri Lanka, will now require a scan to see the extent of the damage.
He is likely to be replaced by a seam bowler, with Steven Finn and Jake Ball both targeting a return to the Test side, while fellow Durham man Mark Wood – fit again after a lengthy injury lay-off – could earna a recall.
England captain Alastair Cook said: "He plays on the edge and gives us an edge. He never takes a backward step and drags people with him. If he’s not there at Edgbaston, he’ll be a big miss.
"It’s too early to say, but Stokesy’s a pretty tough nut, and he said he felt something go. We’ll know a lot more in the morning. He was walking around up in the changing-room, but he’s a fairly big doubt for Edgbaston."
England have a break after levelling the series at Old Trafford, with the next Test getting underway at 11am on Wednesday August 3.
