Wallace completed five catches and assisted in a run out
Lunchtime update
Just 12.5 overs were possible yesterday on a dank and overcast day in South London but the meteorological conditions were literally much brighter this morning, with play starting on time as Glamorgan's bowlers looked to quickly polish off Surrey's first innings. Zafar Ansari and Stuart Meaker duly resumed the innings on 209/7 with Michael Hogan and Jim Allenby using a ball which was barely five overs old.
After a series of singles, Ansari cover drove both bowlers before edging Hogan just short of first slip. Meaker also had the good fortune of getting an inside edge to a drive which flew past the leg stump and hurtled away to the boundary rope. Ansari then greeted the return of Ruadhri Smith by off-driving the undergraduate for three before Meaker enjoyed more good luck as a leading edge flew through the covers before a thick outside edge flew away to third man to bring up the fifty stand.
But Hogan ended Ansari's stay at the crease as Mark Wallace took another diving catch in front of the slips - his fifth of the innings and his 600th dismissal in all first-class cricket - before Chris Tremlett clattered a short ball from Smith through backward point for four. Meaker had already survived a couple of run out scares when another mix-up in calling saw the Surrey batsman run out at the bowler's end by a combination of Wallace and Wagg as he attempted a third run.
Tremlett then used the long handle, clubbing Wagg for three fours and a six in successive balls before Smith ended the innings by bowling Tim Linley in the 105th over. With thirty-five minutes left before lunch, Gareth Rees - who is celebrating his 29th birthday today - opened the Glamorgan innings with Will Bragg, but Rees departed in the fourth over as he edged a delivery from Meaker into Graeme Smith's hands at first-slip.
Stewart Walters announced his arrival at the crease by glancing his first ball to the ropes at square-leg before Bragg deftly glanced Tremlett to the boundary boards at long-leg. In the final over of the morning, Walters also struck successive balls from Tremlett for four to long-off and long-leg as Glamorgan went to lunch on 34/1.
Surrey have claimed six wickets in the post-lunch session.
Teatime report
Stewart Walters had ended the morning session in assertive vein, striking Chris Tremlett for successive fours in the final over before the interval, and he continued to play confidently with Will Bragg as the second wicket pair saw the total past 50 in the 15th over with the latter pulling Meaker to the ropes at mid-wicket before guiding the next ball to the vacant third man position.
Bragg greeted the introduction of Tom Curran into the attack by despatching him through the covers with the southpaw unfurling a series of well-timed drives off both the front and back foot. Zafar Ansari's left-arm spin was then introduced in the 21st over and the Cambridge Blue made the breakthrough as Walters chopped his first ball from the spinner onto the stumps.
69/2 saw Murray Goodwin join Bragg with the veteran opening his account with a swiftly scampered single followed by a pair of rasping cover drives against the spinner. But with the total on 95, Meaker returned at the Vauxhall End and had Bragg caught behind as he edged a rising delivery into Steven Davies' gloves.
Tim Linley also returned to the fray and was swatted for two through point by Goodwin, although the ball might have crossed the ropes for four had it not cannoned into a pigeon which was grazing with around three dozen or so of its feathered friends on the practice wickets in front of the OCS Stand. Goodwin then brought up the hundred by off-driving Linley, but next ball Chris Cooke swatted the ball into the hands of Dominic Sibley at backward point.
With Jim Allenby as his new partner, Goodwin then despatched Linley through the covers, and away from any pigeons, for four but next over, and with the total on 112 Goodwin was trapped leg before by Meaker. Next ball, Mark Wallace edged the seamer into the hands of first slip before Graham Wagg survived the hat-trick by crisply driving the ball through mid-wicket.
Jim Allenby then struck three fours in the space of four balls through the off-side as Curran returned to the attack, whilst the return of Ansari at the Pavilion End saw Wagg hoist the spinner for six high over the ropes at mid-wicket before on-driving Curran for four. But three overs later he miscued a pull and was caught by Rory Burns running back at point as Glamorgan slipped to 152/7.
Surrey secured a first innings lead of 71 runs
Evening update
Resuming after tea on 159/7, Jim Allenby got the scoreboard moving with some crisply-struck drives through mid-wicket before swatting Stuart Meaker through point for four. Ruadhri Smith enjoyed some good fortune as a leading edge against Meaker lobbed over the head of extra cover before running away for four before he skewed another stroke over the head of the slip cordon.
However, there was nothing fortuitous about his next boundary as Smith firmly on-drove Tremlett before Allenby straight drove Meaker for four. Next over he completed his fifty from 64 balls by despatching Ansari through the covers, but Linley then returned and ended Allenby's stay at the crease as Gary Wilson at second slip took a fine catch diving one-handed high to his right.
Smith continued his quixotic innings by smearing Linley to third man for another boundary but the bowler gained revenge two balls later as he trapped the young all-rounder l.b.w. Three balls later Curran ended the innings as he caught and bowled Dean Cosker with Glamorgan 209 all out and trailing by 71 runs.
Surrey had fifteen overs to negotiate in gloomy light and in the sixth over Rory Burns edged Wagg to Stewart Walters at second slip as Surrey lost their first wicket on 15. Graeme Smith though appeared to be playing with few alarms as together with Dominic Sibley he saw his side to 40, but Walters then took a second diving catch in the slips to remove the former Springbok captain to give a jubilant Wagg his second wicket as Surrey ended on 50/2.
