The weather was the only winner at Welbeck CC after rain stopped play shortly after mid-day with the Notts Outlaws on 83/3 from 23 overs after being put in to bat by Glamorgan in their Royal London One-Day Cup match. The rain continued to fall throughout the afternoon with play being called off at 3.45pm
With Graham Wagg ruled out of the match with a facial injury sustained in the NatWest T20 Blast match on Friday night against Gloucestershire, Ruaidhri Smith came into the Glamorgan side with Will Bragg also playing instead of Ben Wright. Yesterday, the Outlaws beat Warwickshire at the Welbeck club, situated in open countryside at Sookholme to the north of Mansfield, with Alex Hales treating the crowd of around 2,000 to a 56-ball hundred as the Outlaws romped to a nine wicket victory with over 20 overs to spare.
Hales was back in action this morning after the Outlaws were put in to bat, with Michael Hogan and Ruaidhri Smith opening the bowling, but he found it very different against the Welsh county as he miscued a pull against Smith and ended up spooning a catch to mid-on. Four balls later, 8/1 became 8/2 as Riki Wessels pulled a delivery from Smith straight into the hands of Aneurin Donald who was positioned at deep backward square-leg.
This saw the two Taylor's - James and Brendan - join forces for the Outlaws and they continued to only accumulate in singles during the opening powerplay which under the revised playing regulations has only two fielders outside the fielding circles. The sequence of singles ended as Brendan Taylor lofted Smith straight for four, but the Outlaws position did not improve as in the 11
th over, James Taylor sparred at a short, rising delivery from Hogan and gave Mark Wallace a regulation catch behind the stumps.
23/3 saw Samit Patel join the Zimbabwean who greeted the appearance of Craig Meschede into the attack at the Scoreboard End by despatching him through backward point for four. David Lloyd then replaced Hogan at the Pavilion End and was struck in the air over mid-off by Taylor, whilst in his second over, the all-rounder found the edge of Patel's bat with the ball evading the outstretched gloves of Wallace as he attempted to move even closer to his goal of 1,000 catches in 1
st XI cricket for Glamorgan.
Taylor then brought up the fifty by drilling Lloyd over mid-on for four before repeating the shot against Meschede. Rain started to fall as Taylor drilled Lloyd over mid-off for four. Patel brought up the fifty stand by driving Meschede through backward point for four before Smith and Hogan returned as the rain got heavier and after 23 overs the umpires - Peter Hartley and Ben Debenham took the players off the field.
Lunch was taken at 1.30pm with the rain still falling, and with the precipitation still occurring an hour later, Glamorgan's best hope appeared to be a ten overs a side contest starting no later than 5.33pm with a winning target of 74. But there was no let-up in the rainfall with the match being called off following an umpires inspection at 3.45pm.
