To get 10 wickets from lunchtime onwards was a terrific effort - Maynard

Head coach Matt Maynard was thrilled with his side's performance as Glamorgan pulled off a miraculous victory on the final day of their LV= County Championship clash against Leicestershire.

Maynard praised batter Sam Northeast for his record-breaking knock, which enabled the Welsh county to declare, as well as opening bowlers Michael Hogan and Michael Neser, who were the catalysts behind bowling the home side out in their second innings.

"To get 10 wickets from lunchtime onwards was a terrific effort, reward for how much work the bowlers have put in this season," said Maynard.

“The original plan had been to bat on after lunch. But we just scored so quickly that we had the 210-lead at lunch that we thought would take us until 20 minutes or so afterwards. But we had a discussion among the coaches and the senior players to look at what our options were and the feeling was that we probably had enough.

“I thought it was perhaps a one in 30 chance of winning but that over when  Michael Hogan got two wickets in one over, including Colin Ackermann, and then when Michael Neser came in and got those two lbws, then you thought, we’ve got a chance here.

“Hogan is going to be going out on a very high note in his last season with us, showing why people keep saying one more year.

“And likewise Neser, who has bowled brilliantly in this match without getting that much luck at times, so for him to get those two lbws and then the final wicket, I’m absolutely delighted for him.

“But it was a great effort from Andrew Salter too to keep it tight at the other end to allow us to rotate the seamers.

“And to have a man, Sam Northeast, in your side who has joined only nine other players to have scored more than 400 in an innings is incredible. It was a remarkable feat and he batted selflessly as well, when we needed to up the scoring rate.

“A lot of things go into a score like. You have to maintain a high level of concentration but he never seemed to deviate from his plans until right at the end, when he started to be more aggressive.

“I don’t think anyone here will have witnessed a better innings. The way he went from 200 to 300 on Friday, it was as if there were no fielders. Every attacking shot he played went for four.

“I’ve seen some good players, I’ve batted with some good players, but to see someone maintain that level for so long was just incredible.”
