Vince and Stoneman help England to solid Ashes start

23 Nov 2017 | Cricket
England closed the first day of the Ashes series on 196/4 after an even day between the two great rivals at the Gabba.

A 125-run second-wicket partnership between Mark Stoneman and James Vince settled England following the early departure of Alastair Cook.

Stoneman was removed for 53 just before tea and then Vince was run out for 83 shortly after the re-start.

A raucous Brisbane crowd celebrated when captain Joe Root was removed lbw on DRS for 15, but Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali held firm at the end of the day.

Morning

England made a worrying start when Alastair Cook was dismissed for just two runs edging to Peter Handscomb off Mitchell Starc.

The Three Lions recovered as Stoneman and Vince saw off the new ball to take the tourists to 59/1 at lunch.

Afternoon

The re-start was delayed due to showers over Brisbane and England continued to bat studiously once play resumed.

Vince was the first man to pass fifty - his first in Tests - as he found his groove with some glorious drives through the off side.

Australia missed a chance when wicketkeeper Tim Paine dropped Vince off Nathan Lyon, but the hosts finally made the breakthrough when Pat Cummins bowled Stoneman just before tea.

Evening

England began the final session on 128/2 but were dealt a blow when Vince, as he approached a maiden Test century, was brilliantly run out by Nathan Lyon for 83.

Australia then claimed the prize wicket of Root for 15, with the captain out lbw to Cummins following a review from Steve Smith.
