Wallace Keen For Early Wickets To Change The Tide

Mark Wallace, who top-scored for Glamorgan on Day One of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Sussex, admitted the Welsh county are behind the eight-ball but was keen for his side to bounce back on Day Two.

Wallace hit 61 and Graham Wagg made 57, but Glamorgan were bowled out for 252, before Sussex reached 111/1 at the close, leaving the visitors just 141 runs behind with nine wickets in hand.

But Wallace refused to be downcast, while admitting that Sussex were in the driving seat. He vowed that the home side would come out fighting tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

Glamorgan fought back resolutely from 56/5 to post 252 thanks to lower order resistance from Wallace, Wagg and Owen Morgan (34 not out).

Wallace said: "It was obviously tough conditions this morning, batting first with the new toss rules meant it was tough and they bowled well.

"We could have got up to 300 and they're definitely in the box seat but there's still plenty of cricket left. There was plenty of seam movement and they've got a quality bowling attack. But you've got to take the rough with the smooth. Ideally either myself or Waggy would have gone on to get a hundred and with a sunny day it got hard for the bowlers, so there are runs to be had."

Wallace, who has moved down the order from opening to number eight with success – scoring 60s in each of his last two innings – admitted he was enjoying life in his new position.

"It's a different game down the order," he added. "I enjoyed opening the batting, but it's a tough challenge and you certainly appreciate the older ball a bit more down the order."

The 34-year-old 'keeper was keen for Glamorgan to take heart from the late wicket of Ed Joyce, who nicked to Wallace off Craig Meschede and fight hard tomorrow.

He said early wickets in the first hour of Day Two could swing the game back towards Glamorgan.

"Getting them one down gives us a sniff. It's a different scoreboard with that wicket of Joyce and if we can get early wickets tomorrow, we're right back in the game," he said.

Glamorgan's Specsavers County Championship clash with Sussex resumes tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11am.
