Northamptonshire win by 6 wickets

Head coach David Harrison has named a 14-man squad for our Royal London Cup fixture against Northamptonshire Steelbacks.

Glamorgan travel to Northampton as they look to get the defence of their title back on track at The County Ground.

The Welsh county are without left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy after he picked up a hamstring injury in our defeat to Yorkshire Vikings yesterday.

McIlroy has been impressive with the ball during the campaign and was the pick of the bowlers against the Vikings taking 2/37 from his allotted overs.

Right-arm fast bowler Ruaidhri Smith replaces McIlroy in the first team squad after recovering from injury. The Scottish international has impressed for the second XI in recent weeks and looks to make his first appearance for the Club since September last year.

Glamorgan currently sit fourth in the Royal London Cup Group B table with two wins from their three games, while Northamptonshire are one place behind the Welsh county after their loss against Hampshire last time out.

View from the camp – Andrew Salter

“It was a disappointing result to take but one game doesn’t define us as a team. We have two massive games coming up away from home and if we win both then we are in the driving seat for a quarter-final.”

“Every team is looking to take us down and we know that as the defending champions. There are plenty of games left to play and we know if we play to our potential that we will win more games than we will lose.”

“I feel pretty good at the moment, the ball has been coming out nicely all season and I feel like I know what my role in the team is. After tasting success in the final last year, we are all desperate to do the same thing again this season.”

“We need to take things one game at a time and do the job at hand first. So we move on to Northants and hope we can get back to winning ways.”

Head-to-head – Northamptonshire Steelbacks vs Glamorgan

The list below shows the last six meetings between Glamorgan and Northamptonshire in List A cricket, with the Welsh county winning their most recent encounter, last season, at the Wantage Road ground after Hamish Rutherford (86) and Tom Cullen (58*) had starred with the bat for Glamorgan as the visitors amassed 295-6. Despite half-centuries from Ben Curran and Tom Taylor, Northants were pegged back by a typically new ball spell from Michael Hogan (3/26) before Joe Cooke (3/32) filleted the lower order to clinch a deserved victory by 59 runs.

Glamorgan’s previous victory in List A cricket against the East Midlands side had been at Northampton during August 2008 when the Welsh county won a 40-over contest after Tom Maynard had struck a forthright 46, before some probing bowling by James Harris, Alex Wharf and Dean Cosker contained the home batsmen.

In all, Glamorgan have met Northamptonshire 49 times in List A cricket, with the Welsh county winning on 29 occasions and losing 18 times. Amongst the highlights have been Glamorgan’s total of 266-6 in the televised contest at Wellingborough School in 1975 when Majid Khan struck a remarkable 22-ball fifty as well as the match during 2004 when Matthew Maynard blasted 117 at Northampton.
