Adrian Shaw was Glamorgan’s wicket-keeper when they won the 1997 County Championship. He was also behind the stumps at Lord’s in the 2000 Benson and Hedges Cup Final at Lord’s, before becoming a highly respected cricket coach.
The former rugby player with Neath RFC had been Glamorgan reserve wicket-keeper since the late 1980s but his superior batting, as testified by a series of centuries in the Second Eleven Championship, led to his promotion over Colin Metson during the second half of 1996 when the county's selectors attempted to strength the county's batting.
Adrian responded with some fluent innings in both formats during 1997 with his gutsy partnership with Steve James against Hampshire, seeing Glamorgan not only to an important second-round win in the Nat West Trophy, but helping to launch a run in the competition which took the Welsh county to the semi-final stages of the country's premier one-day competition.
In 1999 Adrian hit a career-best 140 against Oxford University at The Parks, whilst in 2000 at Sophia Gardens he deftly stumped Brian Lara for a duck during the Welsh county’s match with the West Indians. However, illness and injury saw Adrian lose his place in the county`s 1st XI in 2001 following the emergence of Mark Wallace, but he continued to be an enthusiastic and pugnacious cricketer, leading the county’s 2nd XI. After retiring in 2004, Adrian took over as the Club’s 2nd XI coach, before also having a spell as 1st XI coach.
