Match Drawn
Yorkshire v Glamorgan

A defiant 142* from Sam Northeast plus an obdurate 113 by Colin Ingram - who shared a record fourth wicket stand against the White Rose county - helped Glamorgan to 372-7 and the safety of a draw on the final day of their Vitality County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley with the Welsh county leading the home side by 74 runs when bad light and a thunderstorm ended play shorty after tea.

Day 1

Evening Update

Play resumed at 17.30pm with the loss of 46 overs and to the second ball, from Matthew Fisher, Kiran Carlson unfurled a coruscating straight drive. But the bowler in trying to stop the ball deflected it onto the stumps with a diving Sam Northeast unable to regain his ground. Colin Ingram made his way to the middle and after a couple of overs, the umpires deemed the light to be unsuitable for the seamers so the spinners returned.

Dom Bess then struck with his first delivery as Carlson drilled a ball back to the bowler as Chris Cooke made his way to the middle and guided Bess to third man for four. Dan Moriarty also returned to the attack, before Ingram swept Bess for four. But the light deteriorated further and at 6pm the players left the field after an eventful passage of play.

Afternoon update

Kiran Carlson was Sam Northeast’s new partner as Glamorgan resumed after lunch on 92-2 but only one over was possible before rain forced the players from the field.

The precipitation continued throughout the afternoon with tea being taken at 15.40pm. The umpires inspected at 16.30pm, and agreed that play would resume at 17.30pm with 17 overs remaining.

Morning Report

Glamorgan made three changes to their line-up from the match at Northampton with Eddie Byrom, Jamie McIlroy and Tom Bevan replacing Zain ul Hassan, Dan Douthwaite and loanee Brad Wheal who has returned to Hampshire. Eddie was swiftly back in the action as he opened the batting with Billy Root after Sam Northeast had won the toss, despite the overcast conditions.

Ben Coad and Matthew Fisher shared the new ball with the former finding the edge of Root’s bat with his brother Joe diving to his right but failing to hold onto the ball. Byrom then deftly glided Fisher through the gully for four before drilling him through extra-cover for another boundary. But next over, and with the total on 18, he was trapped l.b.w. by Coad as Sam Northeast made his way to the middle.

Dan Moriarty, the left-arm spinner then entered the attack and extracted some turn from the footmarks, with the gloomy conditions also seeing the floodlights coming on. Fisher duly switched to the Kirkstall Lane End and was cover driven for a pair of fours by Northeast before Root brought up the fifty by pulling Fisher for four before later in the over flicking him to the ropes at square-leg.

Root also swept Moriarty for four before twice cover-driving Matthew Revis as well as reverse-sweeping Moriarty as the second wicket pair continued to steadily accumulate. Root duly completed his fifty, from 88 balls, in the penultimate over of the session before being adjudged caught at bat-pad by Finlay Bean to the final ball of the session.

Day 2

Evening Report

Yorkshire resumed after tea on 106-2 with Root striking the first boundary as he drove a full toss from Crane to mid-wicket. Bean also off-drove Hamza for four before steering him through the gully to complete his 50 from 62 balls. Root then swept Crane for four before Bean off-drove him for another boundary.

Root then late-cut Hamza for four before Bean harpooned Crane for six. Bean then straight-drove Hamza for four before Root nonchalantly reverse-swept Carlson for four en route to a 44-ball fifty. Bean then pulled Carlson for a pair of fours before flicking Harris to the ropes at square-leg followed by a square-drive as the arrears were written off.

Tom Bevan then joined the attack in tandem with Harris who was cover driven for four by Bean to complete his century from 111 balls. He then greeted the return of McIlroy to the attack by pulling him for six before lofting Bevan through mid-off for four. Root also reverse-swept Bevan for four before Bean straight-drove Bevan for six.

Crane returned to the attack and was pulled for four by Bean, before being swept for four by Root as the 200-stand came up. But the light had become gloomy and after 49 overs the umpires took the players off the field.

Afternoon Update

Glamorgan had reached 194-6 at lunch with Bess and Moriarty resuming the bowling after the interval. Harris flat-batted the latter for four before sweeping him for another boundary. However, he departed in Moriarty’s next over as an appeal for a catch at short-leg was upheld. 208-7 became 208-8 as Finlay Bean claimed another catch in that position as Bevan attempted to sweep Bess.

Jamie McIlroy then cut Bess for four but he then pulled the spinner to backward square-leg where George Hill, the substitute fielder, completed a diving catch before Mir Hamza skied a rustic blow against Moriarty with Johnny Tattersall competing the catch. He was swiftly back in the action as Adam Lyth and Bean began the Yorkshire response to Glamorgan’s 221.

Hamza and McIlroy beat the outside edge of both batters during a probing opening salvo with Lyth leg-glancing and on-driving the Pakistani before square-cutting him. But next over Hamza rapped Lyth on the pads and the umpire upheld the l.b.w. appeal. 26-1 saw Shan Masood make his way to the middle and he began by nurdling the left-armer for four before punching him through point for another boundary.

Bean off-drove Harris for four before Masood square-drove him, with Bean also steering McIlroy through point for four followed by a cover-driven boundary. Kiran Carlson and Mason Crane then bowled in tandem until the tea interval with Bean square-cutting Crane for four before hoisting him over long-on for six. But in CRane's next over he had Masood well caught at short-leg by Eddie Byrom

Morning Report

At 92-1 an over before lunch yesterday, Glamorgan appeared to be in the ascendancy only for Billy Root to be caught at bat-pad from the final delivery of the session. Then, after a four-hour delay because of rain, Sam Northeast was run out backing up, before Kiran Carlson drilled a ball back to Dom Bess after the umpires ruled that it was too dark for the quicker bowlers to operate.

The upshot was that after a short delay because of drizzle, and the further loss of three overs, Glamorgan resumed this morning on 109-4 with conditions allowing Matthew Fisher and Ben Coad to return to the attack. Colin Ingram had a life as a sharp chance at second slip was spilled in the fourth over of the day. He celebrated next over by flicking Fisher to square-leg followed by a sumptuous cover drive. Cooke also played a high-class on-drive for four before punching Coad off the back foot through point.

Ingram also square-drive Fisher before the spin of Dan Moriarty was re-introduced and was reverse-pulled for four by Ingram who then lofted him over long-on for six. Matthew Revis also returned to the attack and was punched off the back foot by Cooke but next over, and with the score on 162, Cooke flat-batted a long-hop from Moriarty into the hands of Harry Brook at extra-cover.

Tom Bevan joined Ingram and opened his account by cover-driving Moriarty before his partner pulled Revis to the ropes at square-leg. Bevan then dispatched Revis through extra-cover for four before crisply on-driving Moriarty for another boundary. Dom Bess then returned at the Kirkstall Lane End and, with his second delivery, he trapped Ingram l.b.w. for 48 .

182-6 saw James Harris join Bevan with Joe Root also entering the attack shortly before lunch and being on-driven for four by Bevan.

Day 3

Close of Play Report

An injury to Matthew Fisher, whilst fielding the ball on the mid-wicket boundary had prompted an early tea with Glamorgan on 68-1. Eddie Byrom and Sam Northeast faced the all-spin attack of Dan Moriarty and Dom Bess. After a series of singles, Byrom top-edged a sweep against Bess and was caught at deep square-leg by Coad.

Kiran Carlson joined Northeast as the spinners swopped ends after an over from Root. The floodlights also came on as Carlson lofted Moriarty for four to long-off. Northeast also cut the left-armer through backward point but, with the total on 93, Carlson drove a ball from Bess which cannoned off the body of Joe Root to silly mid-off and back to the wicket-keeper who removed the bails with the batter fractionally out of his ground.

Colin Ingram was the new batter and he began by sweeping Moriarty for four and then drilling Bess through extra-cover. Ingram also deftly flicked Moriarty to fine-leg for four before Northeast reverse-swept Bess to the ropes. Ingram also hoisted Moriarty to long-on for four prior to cover-driving Bess for a sumptuous four.

Matthew Revis then returned to the attack and was clipped to fine-leg for four by Northeast before Ingram swept Root to the fence at backward square-leg. Northeast then flicked Bess to fine-leg for four as Glamorgan ended on 171-3.

Afternoon Update

Yorkshire resumed on 458-4 after lunch with Carlson and McIlroy continuing the bowling with the old ball, even though a new one was available. Brook square-cut McIlroy whilst Tattersall reverse-swept Carlson as well as outside-edging McIlroy to third man, prior to playing an orthodox sweep for four to bring up the fifty stand.

Brook also nurdled the left-armer for one to complete a 63-ball fifty before Crane returned at the Rugby End and was swept for four by Tattersall who then pulled a long-hop for six to reach his fifty from 51 balls and to bring up the 500. However, his jaunty innings ended in Crane’s next over as he jaywalked down the track and was smartly stumped by Cooke.

510-5 saw Matthew Revis join Brook who punched Carlson for four through the covers, but with the total on 518 Revis was bowled trying to sweep Crane as Glamorgan snaffled another bowling point. One run later Brook miscued a drive against Crane to backward point where Andy Gorvin, the substitute fielder, completed a diving catch. His departure prompted a declaration with Crane also returning figures of 5/152 – the first five-for by a leg-spinner for Glamorgan since Robin Hobbs took 5/85 against Essex at Colchester in 1981.

There were 56 overs remaining in the day as Byrom and Root opened the innings with the former drilling Coad through mid-off for four to get the scoreboard moving. Root also pulled and cover drove Coad for a a pair of fours before Moriarty’s spin was introduced in the eighth over. He was cover-driven for four by Byrom whilst Root showed positive intent by striking Coad to the boards at mid-wicket before drilling him through the covers.

Dom Bess also entered the attack sat the Kirkstall Lane End before Byrom cover drove Moriarty for a pair of fours. A reverse-sweep for four by Root against Moriarty brought up the fifty in the 16th over but two overs later he was bowled by the left-armer as the ball cannoned off his pads and onto the stumps. 56-1 saw the arrival of Sam Northeast and the visiting captain began by on-driving Moriarty for four.

Morning Report

Yorkshire gained the upper hand yesterday as they firstly dismissed Glamorgan for 221, before their batters prospered with Finlay Bean and Joe Root adding an unbeaten 189 in just 29 overs during the final session and to build a lead of 74. Glamorgan were therefore looking for wickets when Yorkshire resumed this morning on 295-2 under blue skies.

James Harris and Mir Hamza began the bowling duties with Joe Root firmly off-driving Harris before Bean survived a waist-high catch at first slip as the Pakistani found the edge of the opener’s bat. Root then cover drove his 100th delivery – from Harris – to complete his hundred and secure a second batting point. Bean then square-drove Hamza before cover-driving Mason Crane’s first delivery.

Root then plundered successive boundaries when Jamie McIlroy returned at the Kirkstall Lane End, whilst Bean found the ropes again as he lofted Crane to deep mid-wicket before lofting him for six over long-off. But two balls later he deceived the opener with a well-flighted delivery and bowled him for a career-best 173, besides ending the stand of 265 in 44.1 overs.

Crane then deceived Harry Brook with a couple of googlies before the England batter deposited him over long-off for six. Tom Bevan also returned to the attack and was reverse-swept for four by Root before Brook pulled a long-hop from Crane for six followed by successive cover-driven fours against Bevan. Root then reached his 150 by inside-edging Harris for four but in the bowler’s next over he departed l.b.w. as Yorkshire lost their fourth wicket for 431.

Jonny Tattersall began with off-side drives for four against Harris as well as a sweep for four against Crane Yorkshire secured another batting point shortly before lunch.

Day 4

Evening Update

Glamorgan had lost Tom Bevan to the last ball of the afternoon session so it was James Harris who joined Sam Northeast when play resumed with the Welsh county leading by 64 runs with four wickets remaining. The floodlights were also on with a heavy bank of cumulo-nimbus clouds beyond the Western Terrace, plus some distant rumbles of thunder as Bess and Lyth resumed the bowling with the latter making further inroads in the fourth over of the session as Harris departed l.b.w.

370-7 saw Mason Crane make his way to the middle as conditions got gloomier and play was halted soon afterwards following a vivid flash of lightning. With the light still gloomy and further rumbles of thunder, play was called off at 5pm.

Afternoon Update

Ingram and Northeast had batted throughout the morning session with the Welsh county on 277-3 at lunch, just 21 runs in arrears. Root and Lyth resumed the bowling duties with Ingram launching Root over the head of cover for four before Northeast on-drove successive balls from Lyth to bring up the 200-stand. Moriarty then returned at the Kirkstall Lane End and was dispatched through the covers by Ingram. But with the total on 303, Root switched to the Howard Stand End and removed Ingram who drove uppishly to long-off where Shan Masood completed the catch with his arms aloft.

The pair had added 210 in 68.1 overs - Glamorgan's best-ever for the fourth wicket surpassing the 184 added by Alan Jones and Gwyn Richards at MIddlesborough in 1976 - as Chris Cooke made his way to the middle with his team leading by 5 runs. Northeast duly reached his hundred from 226 balls by steering Moriarty through the covers before drilling Root through mid-wicket. But with the total on 329 Cooke edged a ball from Root onto his stumps as Tom Bevan joined his captain.

Northeast flat-batted Moriarty through the covers for four before Bess replaced Root at the Howard Stand End and had a series of shouts for l.b.w. turned down before Bevan swept Moriarty for four. Adam Lyth then bowled the final over of the session and trapped Bevan l.b.w. to the final ball of the session.

Lunchtime Report

Glamorgan began the day on 171-3, still 128 runs in arrears, with Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram eager to thwart the home side in their pursuit of victory. With Matthew Fisher off the field following his fielding injury yesterday afternoon, Yorkshire continued with spin as Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty resumed the bowling duties. With crease occupation being of paramount importance, the two batters defended stoutly and accumulated in a series of singles.

A flick to square-leg against Bess saw Northeast complete his fifty from 140 deliveries before next ball Ingram followed suit from 121 deliveries. After half an hour’s play, Northeast swept Moriarty for four being Ingram cover-drove the left-arm spinner. Another four – a sweep by Ingram against Bess – brought up the century stand before Joe Root replaced Bess at the Kirkstall Lane End with the off-spinner briefly switching to the Howard Stand End before Adam Lyth had an over.

Yorkshire then took the new ball with Ben Coad and Matthew Revis returning to the attack. Northeast deftly flicked Coad to the ropes at fine-leg before punching Revis off the back foot through extra-cover. Ingram did the same, but off the front foot, to Coad before flicking him to the fence at mid-wicket. After five overs of seam, Moriarty returned to the attack and was clipped to square-leg by Ingram.

Revis conceded a trio of consecutive boundaries as Ingram clipped the seamer to mid-wicket before punching him through extra-cover and backward point. Next over, Ingram pulled Revis for four before sweeping Moriarty to fine-leg. He then cut the spinner for four prior to reaching his century from 202 balls by off-driving Bess.
