Further entries have been received by Glamorgan Cricket in the Ashes Partner Schools Project, with pupils from Builth Wells County Primary submitting their entry in the competition ahead of the First Investec Ashes which starts at Glamorgan's headquarters in Cardiff on Wednesday, July 8th.
During the course of the past few months, the Community Department at Glamorgan Cricket have linked up with primary and secondary schools from across Wales as the schoolchildren have prepared material ahead of the opening Test Match in the 2015 series. Builth Wells County Primary have been one of the primary schools to participate in the project with their Year 6 pupils finding out as much as possible about the iconic Ashes series.

In the words of David Lewis, who has overseen the project at the school, the 45 pupils in our Year 6 classes have tried to get questions to a number of key questions - starting with what does the Ashes mean to people in England and Australia, and why is it called The Ashes, We then researched Australia as a country and their culture. We looked at the importance of leisure activities in Australia, comparing their National Parks with those in Wales, besides looking at Aboriginal art and writing our own dream-time cricketing stories.

All of this helped up to build up a picture of the importance of sport in the Australian way of life. Our pupils then researched some of the key events over the previous series, with our classroom-based activities being linked to the literacy and numeracy framework, as we analysed statistics of players, besides creating bar charts, pie charts and other statistics as we tried to identify who were the best players. As a result of this research, we produced a video and a poem, encapsulating what we believe is the spirit of the Ashes and national identity.

Like the other schools taking part in the Ashes Partner School Project, the pupils from Builth Wells will be present at the Test Match, and will be helping to form the Guards of Honour, besides playing on the pitch during the interval, and all in front of a capacity crowd at the SSE SWALEC.

For us to take part in this project with Glamorgan Cricket is very special, said David Lewis, We are very honoured to be taking part and most of all to share in this wonderful event. The Ashes Partner Schools Project has given our children a sense of understanding about what the Ashes means to people and the wider world, besides feeling proud that this global event is taking place in Wales.
