On Friday 4th September the revamped Barry Athletic Cricket Club Youth Section held their presentation evening that was attended by over 70 children and parents.
The fun filled night was MC'd by Club Secretary Mark Rees with the main focus of the evening built around some of the events and activities the youth section had been involved in throughout the season.
Back in June the club were asked to be Guard of Honour at The T20 Blast game between Glamorgan and Sussex. The youth section hosted a Family Fun Night that was held and attended by over 100 children and parents on 17th July. In order to raise funds for indoor winter training a sponsored walk took place on Sunday 16th August from The Athletic Ground, Barry Island to The SSE SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff, a walk the raised over £400.00 for the Youth section.
The presentation night saw a special award presented to Wesley Baker as Assistant Coach of the year for all his hard work.
Junior Sessions have been very well attended on a Tuesday night with many parents staying to watch which formed part of an activators course that aimed to integrate the parents into the coaching. The enthusiasm and joy on the children's faces in the sessions was great to see and although the summer sessions have now finished, the youth section will be carrying out a Bag Packing Day on Saturday 21st November, in partnership with Waitrose.
The winter indoor training starts in January at The Colcot Sports Hall on Sunday afternoons from 2.00pm to 3.00pm. The club would also like to thank Filco, ASDA, Cricket Wales, Glamorgan CCC, Barry Communities First, Waitrose, Sport Wales and Vale of Glamorgan Council for all their help in making the youth section a success.
A big Thank You goes to Rauidhri Smith and James Kettleborough of Glamorgan who were in attendance on the evening to make the presentations to the Youth section and are pictured with the Youth section on the night.
Mark Ellis, Youth Coordinator commented This was a really enjoyable evening for the youngsters, at the start of the year there wasn't a youth section but with support from Mark Rees, Tom Miller, Tom Davies & Ashley Baker we have held cricket training sessions every Tuesday evening.
We have also been able to host some special events including a sponsored walk, a Family Fun Night and a visit to the SWALEC stadium where the youngsters were guards of honour at a Glamorgan 20/20 game. Cricket Wales and Glamorgan have backed us all the way and next year we hope to make further progress.
