Day one of the final 2025 Division Two Rothesay County Championship match saw Glamorgan welcome Lancashire to Sophia Gardens - with both sides having moments to celebrate during the day.
In his final game before moving back to former side Kent, Sam Northeast lost his final toss as the visitors elected to bowl first. The decision worked wonders almost instantly for Lancashire as Zain Ul Hassan was sent packing with the first ball of the day by Tom Bailey, as the pace bowler took out Ul Hassan’s leg stump.
In his final game as a Glamorgan player, Sam Northeast was hoping to end his years in the Welsh capital like he’d played throughout his time at Glamorgan. However, George Balderson had halted the penultimate curtain call for top-order batter as he was adjudged to be out lbw for 20.
All-rounder Timm van der Gugten took the plaudits however during the innings with an unbeaten half century from 105 deliveries, as his team looked to end the season as they had played throughout the campaign to earn a spot in Division One.
As the day ticked over into the evening session, Mason Crane looked like he would also join van der Gugten on a half century. To his frustration he was bowled by Tom Bailey for 42, six overs after the tea break as the hosts looked to put a competitive score on the board.
Tom Bailey concluded the Glamorgan innings on 265 when he dismissed Ned Leonard for 12 in the 74th over to end with figures of 5 for 51. The visitors then came into bat with 20 overs remaining in the day as Glamorgan looked to cast doubt on their chance of chasing with some early wickets.
Lancashire’s openers batted slowly as the day came to a close, with Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings creating a 50-run partnership in the 18th over. Day one ended with Lancashire 55/0, trailing by 210.
When questioned about the days play, Kiran Carlson said, “It was a strange wicket initially which was hard to score on, with a bit of nip making it difficult to get going.
“Luckily our lower order chipped in to get us to a decent total. It was a wicket where you can get three or four (wickets) relatively quickly - and hopefully we can start well tomorrow and get back into the game.”

Day two gets underway at 10:30am from Sophia Gardens. Supporters who can't join us can catch the action live on our live stream.
