Finding Lightning Programme Proving Successful

25 Jul 2023 | Talent Pathway

Finding Lightning is a Club initiative run by former Derbyshire and Middlesex fast bowler, Ali Bukhari with the aim of discovering the next batch of fast bowlers in Wales.

The trials opened last year to anyone aged between 12-20 who was not already on the Glamorgan or Cricket Wales Talent Pathways.

In August/September 2022, around 80 boys and girls came along to the fast bowling trials. After the final trials, 14 bowlers were selected for the winter fast bowling programme under the coaching of Bukhari. The bowlers who got selected were put through their paces in their fitness and fast bowling training.

After an intense winter training in fast bowling, seven bowlers were chosen with the most improved pace.

In those top seven fast bowlers were:

Jack Williams (18 years) improved his bowling speed from 71mph to 78mph in just 5 months and is now playing for Wales U18s.

Daniel Andrew (16 Years) improved his bowling speed from 70mph to 76mph and was selected for Wales U16s.

Charlie Collins (17 Years) improved his bowling speed from 70mph to 74 mph.

Fabio Franco (15 Years) improved his bowling speed from 65mph to 73mph and is now playing for Wales U16s.

Tom Vizard (12 Years) improved his bowling speed from 65mph to 67mph and is now playing for Wales U13s.

William Schrimshaw (12 Years) improved his bowling speed from 60mph to 64mph.

Jessica Price (13 Years) improved her bowling speed from 49mph to 53mph.

The Finding Lightning programme will run once again this year with dates to be confirmed very soon. With the idea backed by Mark Wallace, Richard Almond and Ali Bukhari, the Finding Lightning Programme hopes to find the likes of the next Simon Jones through the next batch of fast bowlers in Wales.
