Glamorgan Cricket confirms that Gareth Williams will step down from his position as Chair of the Club following his appointment as a director of the England and Wales Cricket Board.
ECB governance arrangements do not allow directors to hold positions within the County game and consequently, after nearly 5 years as Chair of Glamorgan, Gareth will be stepping down from this position.
During his tenure, Gareth has built on the foundations laid by his predecessor Barry O’Brien to establish Glamorgan as a well-run, financially stable, and accessible Club for people from all communities. Under his stewardship, the club has successfully hosted matches in the ICC World Cup in 2019, launched Welsh Fire in The Hundred competition, won the Royal London 50 Cup and established vibrant community programmes.
Commenting on the announcement Chief Executive Hugh Morris said: “Gareth Williams has been an outstanding and universally popular Chair of Glamorgan County Cricket Club. His wise counsel, calm leadership and engaging personality, particularly during the COVID pandemic will be sorely missed by everyone associated with the Club, but it is comforting to know these qualities will benefit the wider game in England and Wales.”
“On behalf of the Board and staff of Glamorgan I would like to thank Gareth for his time, commitment and encouragement throughout his tenure and on a personal note I would like to thank him for the unequivocal support he has given me as chief executive through some challenging times.”
Gareth Williams said; “It was a privilege to be invited to succeed Barry O’Brien as Chair of Glamorgan and I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the past five years. I would like to thank the board and senior executive team for your contribution to the cause of Glamorgan. Glamorgan is a shining example of what can be achieved when the board and executive have a clear sense of direction and an understanding that collaboration achieves so much more than conflict. It has been a great joy, and a rare privilege, for me to have worked with so many talented and committed people.
“I wish the Club great success in the years which lie ahead, but, more importantly for me, I would like to thank our loyal Members and supporters for your unstinting support and the staff of the Club for their hard work and commitment to a club which holds a unique place in all our hearts.”
The process for recruiting the new Chair of Glamorgan County Cricket Club will begin shortly and will be led by the Nominations Committee of the Club. In the meantime, Deputy Chair Ann-Marie Smale will be Acting Chair of the Club.
Glamorgan County Cricket Club also congratulates Cricket Wales Chair, Jennifer Owen Adams, on her appointment to the ECB Board.
