Glamorgan Cricket and Cymru Women’s Sport Unite to Celebrate Women’s Game at Sophia Gardens
On July 18th, Glamorgan Cricket and Cymru Women’s Sport came together to celebrate the launch of the Glamorgan Cricket Women’s team in a landmark event held at Sophia Gardens Stadium ahead of the Vitality Blast Double Header. The occasion brought together just under 100 guests, including staff, partners, and allies of the women's game, for an afternoon focused on collaboration, progress, and passion for cricket’s growing presence in Wales.
The event opened with welcome drinks and a live DJ set from Welsh rugby legend Josh Navidi, setting a vibrant tone before attendees heard from Glamorgan Cricket CEO, Dan Cherry and Cymru Women’s Sport co-founder, Emma Henwood. Both speakers highlighted the momentum behind women’s sport in Wales and the importance of inclusive leadership in sport.
“In Wales, we have a bold and exciting vision: for cricket to become the number one women’s sport in the country,” said Dan Cherry. “And we’re not just saying that we’re backing it up with investment, visibility, and action. From grassroots clubs to the elite level, we believe we are creating a pathway that is inspiring, inclusive, and genuinely transformative.”
A standout moment of the event was the panel discussion hosted by journalist Beth Fisher, who was joined by Glamorgan’s very own Head of Women’s Cricket, Aimee Rees and Cymru Women’s Sport board member, Ria Burrage-Male. The conversation delved into the journey of the women’s game so far, the role of allyship, and how meaningful cultural change is already taking shape.
Following the event, guests filled the stands to cheer on Glamorgan Women in their fixture against Kent, in a thrilling match that went down to the final ball, the team narrowly missed out on victory. This celebration was made more poignant by the Glamorgan Women’s team’s remarkable debut season, which has seen them reach the Vitality Blast Finals Day, a significant milestone that highlights the promise and potential of the team as they work towards full time professional status in 2027.
