On Wednesday, November 11th, a special event entitled "Glamorgan Remembers" will be taking place in the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket at Glamorgan Cricket's headquarters at the SSE SWALEC in Cardiff.
The event, which starts at 7.30pm will comprise a series of talks by a group of speakers looking back to events a hundred years ago, and in particular what took place in Gallipoli during 1915. The evening, which is being staged in conjunction with The Royal British Legion, will start with a short talk by Dr. Andrew Hignell, the Curator of the Museum and the Archivist of Glamorgan CCC, outlining events from the cricketing summer of 1914 and the early years of the War.
Phil Jones, the Wales Area Manager of The Royal British Legion, will then speak about events leading up to the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 as well as giving an outline of the dreadful events where many English, Welsh and Australian cricketers lost their lives serving King and Country.
Jeffrey Bird of Cowbridge CC will then speak about the impact of the Great War on Cowbridge CC, especially the loss of the Dunn brothers, who had played a leading role on and off the field with the club, with Jeffrey outlining how the Club were able to successfully recover from the death of the Dunn's during the landings at Suvla Bay.
Phil Jones will then speak again about the work of The Royal British Legion, before Andrew Hignell introduces the Glamorgan Remembers project, which over the course of the next few years, will be commemorating the contribution made by members of the cricketing community of Wales during the First and Second World War.
A special section on the Glamorgan CCC website will be created as well as educational material for use in local schools. The latter will be undertaken in conjunction with Cardiff University and Dr. Jenny Kidd from the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies will also say a few words about the educational aspects of the Project. Andrew Hignell will then round off the evening by showing examples of some of the educational material which has already been produced.
The doors of the Museum will be open from 6.45pm, giving time for people to look at some of the other exhibits and films in the Museum. Tickets for this event are available for current Glamorgan members, as well as members of the British Legion and other ex-servicemen's organisations at £3 in advance or £4 on the door on the night. For all others, it's £4 in advance or £5 on the door (Price includes complimentary tea and coffee).
