Glamorgan staff take hands on approach to first aid

Some of Glamorgan Cricket's most high profile staff have taken part in a first aid course to ensure that staff and visitors are in safe hands at the SWALEC Stadium.
Chief executive Hugh Morris and the club's coaching team have completed a 'First Aid for Sport and Exercise' course (FASE1) delivered by the club's partners Lubas Medical.

FASE1 was designed by Lubas Medical to provide anyone from grassroots players to sports professionals with a comprehensive knowledge of handling medical emergencies. The course has been adapted for cricket, following Lubas' extensive experience working with Glamorgan and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Paul Lubas, Lubas Company Director, said: We've been working with Glamorgan for about 3 years, providing training and medical cover at domestic and international fixtures, so we were delighted to be asked to help improve the Club's first aid preparedness.

As the Club has experienced in the past, medical emergencies can occur in any situation to players, support staff and supporters, so it is important that there are several members of the club's staff with the necessary skills to assist in these circumstances. Glamorgan have their own trained medical staff on hand, as well as an experienced stewarding team with their own medical training, but I think it's commendable that Hugh and the coaching team are also ensuring they know how to react.

Hugh Morris, Glamorgan Chief Executive said: The coaching team and I felt it was important we were upskilled in First Aid, in the event something should happen when our medical support staff were unavailable at a future match, in training or even in our normal daily lives.

Since I returned to the club we've made investing in our science and medicine staff and procedures a priority and as a result we've seen our ECB audit score in this area improve significantly.

The First Aid training with Lubas Medical is an extension of this, and I must say despite the serious nature of the course it was a particularly enjoyable and engaging experience, as well as extremely worthwhile in terms of the key messages it delivered.

Lubas Medical is a Cardiff-based company which has provided first aid training since 2009, teaching hundreds of people to safely administer first aid on the field of play or in their work environment.
