Glamorgan take on Middlesex in final Blast fixture

2 Jul 2023 | Cricket

Limited Overs Head Coach Mark Alleyne has named an unchanged 14-player squad for Glamorgan's final Vitality Blast fixture against Middlesex.

The Welsh county lost their rain-affected match against Hampshire Hawks on Friday night. Hants were 97/2 (9.2 overs) when rain stopped play.

After more than a two-hour delay, when the sides came back out, Glamorgan were challenged with a tough total, with their target being 83 from 6 overs on DLS.

Despite Colin Ingram's best efforts, scoring 34 from 14 balls, the Welsh county fell short of their target, losing by 21 runs.

The result means that Glamorgan's very slim hopes of qualification have now ended and the side have slipped to eighth in the South Group.

Their opponents this afternoon, Middlesex, have largely had a campaign to forget, winning just twice in 13 matches. However, the North London side most recently won at Chelmsford against Essex, chasing down a mammoth 226 runs for victory.

View from the Camp - Mark Alleyne

"Every game we play, we want to try and win. Our aim in this tournament was to progress to the Quarter-Finals, but a close second to that was about developing players so that we can compete on this stage on a regular basis. So, there's still a lot to play for on Sunday.

"With quite a tight squad over the tournament, you need a little bit of luck with injuries to keep everyone fizzing, so even the ones that were playing were sometimes not 100 percent fit.

"It's provided an opportunity to look at guys I might not have seen in this format and for me, I've found it quite exciting. We weren't always at our strongest but we were always competitive and there's a lot to look forward to in the future".

The match at Cardiff between the two sides last summer saw a memorable display of controlled strokeplay, as David Lloyd (67) and Sam Northeast (89) gave a masterclass of batting in the short format in front of a crowd which included almost 2,900 schoolchildren and college students as Glamorgan completed a crushing eight-wicket victory with 34 balls to spare .

During 48 minutes of high-octane batting, both men compiled 23-ball fifties as they shared an opening stand of 150 in 11.5 overs with their total of 84-0 during the opening six overs also being a Club record for the powerplays, with both batters hitting boundaries seemingly at will as the visiting attack leaked runs like a rusty bucket.

The match at Sophia Gardens in 2021 also saw a Glamorgan victory by 21 runs thanks to a typically vibrant 75 by Colin Ingram, whilst Timm van der Gugten and Dan Douthwaite shared four wickets between them.
