Unemployed young people aged 16-25 from the Cardiff area have been gaining skills and experience in hospitality on a course run by youth charity The Prince's Trust in partnership with Glamorgan County Cricket Club. This is the first time the two organisations have worked together.
'Fed up?' is a three week course which started on 15th June where local unemployed young people develop hospitality and employability skills, earn qualifications, receive customer service training and gain vital work experience.
Following the programme, participants will be able to put their skills into practice at various cricket matches and events coming up at the Swalec Stadium this summer, starting with The Ashes in Cardiff on 8th July.
'Fed up?' forms part of the Truth about Youth programme, which is funded by The Co-operative Foundation and delivered by The Prince's Trust. The programme is designed to challenge negative perceptions of young people by enabling them to make a positive contribution in their community, as well as gaining skills to help them move into work.
The young people had an opportunity to spend Day 2 of the Glamorgan CCC vs. Leicestershire CCC match with various Glamorgan members, getting to know them, preparing a lunch and learning about cricket.
Glamorgan CCC Member Alan Gibson said, Before today I had rather a mixed view of young people. Some hang out in gangs and can be very intimidating but others can be very good. The young people I met today are outstanding in behaviour and politeness and have excellent communication skills.
'Fed up?' participant Liam, 20, from Pontypool said, I really enjoyed my day with John Curtin. I learned all about how much life has changed over the years. He had some fantastic stories about what life was like for him when he was younger. It was also great to talk to someone who loves cricket as much as I do!
Lesley Kirkpatrick, Director for The Prince's Trust Cymru said, We are delighted to have established a partnership with Glamorgan Country Cricket Club to offer unemployed young people the chance to develop employability skills and gain vocational experience. The Truth about Youth programme enables young people to prove they have a huge amount to offer employers while making an active contribution in their community.
Glamorgan CCC CEO Hugh Morris said, As a club, Glamorgan are always looking at new ways to develop our close relationship with the local community, and this course will only serve to benefit those 16-25 year olds who are searching for employment. The Prince's Trust is an outstanding organisation and we look forward to continuing our work alongside them in the future.
The Prince's Trust supports more than 3,500 young people in Wales each year through its programmes. Three in four young people supported by The Trust move into work, education or training.
