Twin brothers Mike and Dave Knight, 65, have been awarded British Empire Medals for voluntary service to Newport Cricket Club in South Wales.
Stalwarts of Newport CC for over 40 years, both brothers were once fine cricketers for the side themselves, and have been involved with the club since they were schoolboys. Both former school teachers, they devote much of their spare time to club business and especially the development of young cricketers. The youth section at Newport has seen flourishing growth, thanks to their hard work. They have also been instrumental in leading the development of women's cricket across Newport and Wales.
Mike and Dave played a significant role in helping the club recover from being close to closure in the 1980s following the enforced sale of the club’s ground at Rodney Parade. Now based at Spytty Park, over recent years Newport CC has established itself as one of the best cricket facilities in Wales, undoubtedly down to the hard work of the Knight brothers and their loyal band of volunteers. It is now used regularly by Glamorgan, Wales Minor Counties and Cardiff MCCU. These efforts finally saw county cricket return to Newport for the first time in more than 50 years when Glamorgan played Gloucestershire at Spytty Park in 2019.
ECB chief executive officer, Tom Harrison, said: "It’s fantastic to see Mike and Dave Knight recognised for a lifetime of service to Newport Cricket Club."
Hugh Morris, Glamorgan CEO, said: "Many congratulations to both Mike and Dave - these awards are well-earned recognition for their contribution and success at Newport CC. These accolades are also a testament to their tremendous passion and determination in promoting cricket throughout Wales. Very well deserved indeed!"
