Leics v Glam

After a competitive match at the Uptonsteel County Ground, the game between Leicestershire and Glamorgan ended in a draw. Glamorgan finished their second innings at 157 for four, holding a lead of 201 runs, with Sam Northeast not out at 41. Standout performances included Timm van der Gugten and Scott Currie taking five wickets each, along with a century from Leicestershire's Peter Handscomb.

Day 1

Evening Update

Play resumed after tea with Mason Crane joining Sam Northeast at the crease until Crane was dismissed lbw to Currie with 14 off 19 balls.

Timm van der Gugten returned from injury to help Northeast steady the ship and move Glamorgan onto 300 to claim a second batting bonus point.

Northeast's steady progress earned him a half century off 100 balls and the 8th wicket partnership was responsible for 62 runs until Timm van der Gugten was out lbw to Currie for 32.

James Harris came into bat and helped Glamorgan to finish the day with 3 batting bonus points with Sam Northeast (61) and James Harris (8) not out.

Afternoon Update

The post-lunch session saw Marnus Labuschagne misjudge a ball that took out his off stump as his day finished on 8 runs. Byrom then had a lucky escape on 49 as Peter Handscomb dropped a catch at second slip.

It looked an expensive drop as Byrom and Carlson added 83 in just 12 overs and stemming the flow of runs was looking beyond Leicestershire. However their third wicket came as Byrom, with a hundred seemingly in his sights after hitting 13 fours and two sixes, was bowled by Salisbury off an inside edge.

Carlson passed fifty for the fourth time this season, needing only 45 balls, but he followed Byrom in missing out on three figures after he launched himself into an attempt to clear the midwicket rope against Louis Kimber’s off-spin only to be foiled by a diving Harry Swindells, on as substitute fielder for Scrivens, who took the catch.

Chris Cooke was bowled by Currie for 2 and, although Glamorgan claimed their 1st batting point, Zain ul Hassan's wicket fell for 1 just before tea with bowler Mike appealing for leg before after hitting the batter on the toe before turning to discover the ball had looped up and spun back into the stumps with the last ball of the over.

Morning Update

The Welsh county made three changes to their team from the one which lost against Middlesex at Cardiff, with Mir Hamza, Timm van der Gugten and Billy Root returning in place of Colin Ingram, Andy Gorvin and Jamie McIlroy. Root duly opened the batting with Eddie Byrom after Leicestershire opted to bowl first with Matt Salisbury and Ian Holland sharing the new ball.

There was plenty of lateral movement for the pair and it was not until the sixth over that the first boundary was scored as Byrom flayed Holland through point. Byrom also hoisted Salisbury for six over square-leg before Root square-drove and cover-drove Holland for a pair of fours. Byrom then greeted Scott Currie by drilling his first two balls to third man and point.

The pair brought up the 50 in the 13th over with Root also drilling Currie for four through the covers followed by a pull for another boundary. Root then flayed Ben Mike for four through extra-cover but later in the over drove Mike to backward point where Rishi Patel held a head-high catch.

90-1 saw the arrival of Marnus Labuschagne shortly before the lunch interval with the Australian surviving a loud appeal for lbw by Mike.

Day 2

Evening Update

The pitch was looking increasingly unhelpful to the bowlers after tea, and James Harris' short balls weren't bearing any fruit until Hill played a deliberate uppercut to a delivery from round the wicket and was caught on 92 by Billy Root running in from third man.

The Leicestershire 4th wicket partnership of 141 runs had taken the side much of the way towards the follow-on point, which was passed, when new man Ian Holland cut Zain Ul-Hassan through backward point for his first boundary as a Leicestershire player.

It was the only boundary of his debut innings though, when facing the third delivery with the new ball, Holland went for 16 bowled Harris, caught Cooke. Currie replaced Holland and Leicestershire finished the day 280/5 with Peter Handscomb on an unbeaten 102, his second century of the season, and Currie on 13.

Glamorgan remain in a strong position in the match with a lead of 107 and the chance to bowl with a new ball only five overs old when they resume on Day 3.

Afternoon Update

Early in the post-lunch session, a great ball from Timm van der Gugten resulted in his second wicket as Rishi Patel was caught by Chris Cooke for 27 earning a 1st bowling bonus point for Glamorgan. Leicestershire were in difficulty at 65 for three.

Lewis Hill and Peter Handscomb were then thoroughly tested with the ball by Hamza but Leicestershire’s fourth-wicket pair weathered the storm and, with the pitch seeming to flatten out, Hill completed his second half-century of the season off 98 balls and had progressed to 66 out of 161 for three at tea.

Morning Update

Glamorgan started Day 2 on 352/8 but the first ball of the day saw Captain Sam Northeast dismissed for 61 as Scott Currie's ball brushed Sam Northeast’s glove on the way through to keeper Ben Cox leaving James Harris and Mir Hamza to finish the batting for Glamorgan.

Harris started brightly looking to make the most of the sunny weather by finding the boundary. He and Hamza added 35 for the last wicket before Harris was caught behind on 18. Hamza was not out with a fine 24 off 38 balls including a 4 and two consecutive 6s.

Glamorgan's 1st innings came to an end on 387 when Harris was out to a bouncer from Mike caught by Cox for 18.  Leicestershire seamer, Currie recording the first five-wicket haul of his first-class career, finishing with five for 64.

Leicestershire needed to reach 238 to avoid the follow on with Rishi Patel and Marcus Harris opening facing Mir Hamza. Australian international Harris - like Hamza in the last match of his county stint - was leg before to a full-length ball from the Pakistan left-armer for 14 before Louis Kimber edged behind for Timm van der Gugten's first wicket of the season caught by Cooke for 1.

Lunch was taken with Leicestershire 57/2, trailing by 330 runs.

Day 3

Evening Update

In the evening session at Grace Road, play was abruptly interrupted by heavy rain just after two overs. This brings a conclusion to the day's play.

Afternoon Update

The afternoon session saw some intense action as James Harris opened the bowling for Glamorgan. Marnus Labuschagne followed with a brief spell, focusing on bouncers. Timm van der Gugten made a significant impact by breaking the partnership between Currie and Cox, taking a brilliant return catch to dismiss Cox for 20. In the same over, van der Gugten clean bowled Ben Mike, completing his five-wicket haul.

Scriven, hindered by a hamstring injury, had Kimber running for him. James Harris continued his spell, trapping Currie LBW for 45. Leicestershire then declared at 343/9, trailing Glamorgan by 44 runs.

In response, Glamorgan's second innings began with Billy Root and Eddie Byrom opening the batting. Root was bowled by Salisbury in the sixth over, and Marnus Labuschagne joined Byrom at the crease. The session concluded with tea being taken, as Glamorgan looked to build on their 44-run lead and set up an intriguing final phase of play.

Morning Update

Due to a rain delay of one hour, play started at 12 PM with eight overs lost. After just nine balls were bowled, players left the field again on the umpire's call due to wet areas on the outfield. Play resumed with three more overs lost, and Glamorgan fielded with a bowler short as Mir Hamza hurt his hamstring, with Andy Gorvin coming in as a substitute. Van der Gugten trapped Handscomb LBW for 103, securing his third wicket, while Leicestershire earned their second bonus point by reaching 300 runs. However, the outfield remained slow, and rain interrupted play again, leading to a lunch break.

Day 4

Evening Update

After an early tea due to rain, Cooke and Northeast extended their partnership to 66. With more rain clouds gathering and the unusual sight of Australian opener Marcus Harris, who rarely bowls, taking the ball, it became clear the match was heading for a draw. Harris, who had only bowled 16 overs in his 13-year career, remained wicketless when rain returned.

As the skies opened again, the game at Uptonsteel County Ground ended in a predictable draw, with Glamorgan finishing their second innings at 157/4, leading by 201 runs, with Sam Northeast unbeaten on 41. Both teams secured 13 points each from the match, leaving Glamorgan with a total of 82 points after seven games. Leicestershire remain the only team in either division of the Vitality County Championship to neither win nor lose a match.

Afternoon Update

Before lunch, Glamorgan lost a couple of wickets which offered Leicestershire some hope. Eddie Byrom was given out leg before to Scott Currie, and Ben Mike bowled Marnus Labuschagne with a delivery that nipped back between bat and pad, hitting the off stump. Mike struck again two overs after lunch, removing Kiran Carlson, who had been hit in the abdomen shortly before. At that point, Glamorgan were effectively 135/4 with 62 overs remaining in the day.

Chris Cooke and Sam Northeast then steadied the innings, guiding Glamorgan to 132/4 when rain interrupted play again just before three o'clock, with a lead of 176 runs.

Morning Update

Glamorgan's progress in the opening hour of the day, started with an overnight lead of 58 and one wicket down. A long wait for the first boundary of the day, interrupted by a 20-minute rain shower, ended with Marnus Labuschagne starting to pick up the pace.
