A tribute to Shane Warne and Rodney Marsh

Glamorgan Cricket is deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the deaths of both Rodney Marsh and Shane Warne.

The Australian cricket legends both passed away yesterday with Marsh aged 74 and Warne just 52.

Chief executive, Hugh Morris, said: “It is barely believable that within the space of 24 hours we have lost two of the truly great cricketers and characters of our game.”

“I remember growing up recognising Rodney Marsh as a Champion cricketer in a world-class Australian team of the 1970s and, 25 years later, I had the great fortune to work with him at the England and Wales Cricket Board and soon realised he was an even better bloke who became a great friend.”

“Rod had a unique eye for talent and had an exceptional record for nurturing some of the modern-day heroes of our game both in Australia and in England and Wales. He was equally at home speaking to contemporaries from his playing days or bright-eyed youngsters selected onto the Academy programmes for the first time, and they all hung on his every word.

"Like Shane Warne, Rod did so much to shape the game he loved and inspire future generations to follow in his illustrious footsteps. Our thoughts are with Ros, Paul, Jamie and Daniel at this most difficult time.”

“I first met Shane Warne in 1991 when he was at the Australian Cricket Academy and had the dubious pleasure of facing him for three days in the nets as he and I sat out the England against The Australian Academy at St Peter’s College in Adelaide. It was clear from the outset he was an extraordinary talent who would take the cricketing world by storm.”

“He was truly one of the greatest cricketers to play the game and turned himself into a fantastic pundit and to lose him at such a young age is an absolute tragedy. The thoughts of everyone at Glamorgan are with the friends and family of Shane.”

Director of Cricket, Mark Wallace, added: "Rod had a huge impact on me during the two winters I had with him on the National Academy in Adelaide.

"He was notoriously tough but had a great ability to be warm and inspiring at the same time.

"The time I spent working with Rod was amongst my most enjoyable as a cricketer and my sympathy goes out to Ros and his family.

"Shane Warne was a legend in the true sense of the word who transcended the sport. He didn’t just inspire people by making the hardest cricketing skill look easy but with his clear exuberance and love for the game."
