Australia batsman Usman Khawaja has signed as Glamorgan’s second overseas player for this year’s Vitality Blast T20 competition subject to No Objection Certificate approval from Cricket Australia.
The elegant left-hander will be available for all 14 matches in the Group Stage of the competition and will join compatriot Shaun Marsh who has signed as Glamorgan’s overseas player for the next two years.
"I’m delighted to have signed for Glamorgan for their Vitality Blast campaign and look forward to the challenge of helping them build on the success they achieved in last year’s competition,” said Khawaja.
“From my point of view, it would be great to be able to take them a step further and bring silverware back to Wales. Glamorgan have some fantastic players in their squad and I can’t wait to join up with the team and play with Shaun again.”
Khawaja has a wealth of experience in T20 cricket having played in the Big Bash League for Sydney Thunder and in the IPL for Rising Pune Supergiants.Despite playing only three matches in this year’s Big Bash League, due to Test Match commitments, he struck two half-centuries, which included a top score of 85.
Across his career Khawaja has played 58 T20 matches, amassing 1,702 runs at an average over 32 and has hit two centuries. Khawaja has also represented Australia in nine T20 internationals with a top score of 58 against Bangladesh.
The 31-year-old is also a celebrated Test Match player and was an integral member of Australia’s 2017/18 Ashes winning campaign. He struck 171 in the final match of the series at his home ground in Sydney - his sixth Test Match century.
Hugh Morris, Director of Cricket at Glamorgan, said: “Usman is a world class player who has played at the highest level for a number of years and has experience in playing T20 cricket around the world.
“Despite his classical style he is a very destructive batsman who can dominate any bowling attack and I’m sure is someone our supporters will look forward to watching this year. With his addition to our batting line-up, which already includes Colin Ingram and Shaun Marsh, as well our young Glamorgan players, we have batting line-up capable of continuing our success in the competition and thrill crowds in Wales.”
Khawaja will entertain The SSE SWALEC crowds across seven homes matches beginning with their Sunday fixture against Sussex on Sunday, 8th July.
