Glamorgan supporting NSPCC’s Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week

2 Oct 2023 | Community

This week Glamorgan County Cricket Club is supporting the NSPCC’s Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week.  Safeguarding is part of the fabric of what we do here at Glamorgan; we have a dedicated specialist staff member committed to this area of work.

Behind the scenes we manage an extensive community programme, host child and adult events, and look after the thousands of children visiting our museum from local schools every year.

Whilst putting 22 players on the pitch in our first and second team, we also run the Glamorgan Academy and Welsh Age Group teams, working with our players and parents to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

Lastly, did you know that during ‘big crowd’ events, such as the T20 Blast, The Hundred, Internationals, SophiaWorks and concerts, our Safeguarding Specialist works alongside our stewarding and safety team, proactively patrolling the stadium, engaging with families, and making sure that we provide as safe an environment as possible.

We are proud of what we do here, and proud to support the NSPCC’s Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week.

Hugh Morris, Chief Executive of Glamorgan said: “We are exceptionally proud of the safe environment we provide here at Sophia Gardens. We want to ensure the safest possible visit for everyone involved in the club. Indeed, we are unique in routinely providing a Safeguarding Officer at every event at our stadium. Safeguarding is truly embedded here, with the senior management team and the Board scrupulously overseeing what we do.”

Ieuan Watkins, the Glamorgan County Cricket Club Safeguarding Lead added: “We are delighted to support the NSPCC with the NSPCC’s Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week.  Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.  Here at Glamorgan, we have embedded a safe environment across our organisation. We know that if we work alongside players, coaches, parents, spectators, partners, and everyone else – that together we can truly make a difference.”

Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport is a national, year-round campaign run by the NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit (NSPCC CPSU) which aims to raise awareness of the important role parents play in keeping their child safe and happy in sport. Each year from 2nd to 6th October, the NSPCC highlights the campaign with a focus week and as part of the campaign this year, they are asking parents to think and learn about 3 key areas of being involved in their child’s sport: Getting involved, Being supportive, Keeping children safe.
