Yorkshire v Glamorgan at Headingley: Head-to-Head

30 Apr 2024 | Cricket

Glamorgan travel to Leeds for their next match in the Vitality County Championship as they meet Yorkshire at Headingley in a game scheduled to start at 1100am on Friday, 3 May (writes Andrew Hignell).

Glamorgan’s match at Headingley last summer was a thrilling contest with Marnus Labuschagne scoring an unbeaten 170 and Michael Neser recording a hat-trick. After rain and bad light on the third evening, Glamorgan had 96 overs in which to bowl out Yorkshire for a second time, and in a gripping finale it looked like the Welsh county would win as the ninth wicket fell in the penultimate over. But despite a ring of nine close catchers, Jordan Thompson fended off the last six balls from Neser as a great game ended in a draw.

The Welsh county had also held the upper hand on their previous visit to Headingley in 2021, as they drew their match with Yorkshire having set the White Roses a notional target of 379 from 76 overs after snow had seen the loss of play on the third day. Glamorgan’s strong position after their second innings was the result of an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 212 in 69.5 overs between Billy Root and Chris Cooke, who each scored individual hundreds.

Had it not been for the inclement weather three years ago, Glamorgan might have recorded their first victory at Headingley since September 1999 and a game when Matthew Maynard scored a majestic 186 before Steve Watkin claimed four wickets as the Tykes were forced to follow-on. Owen Parkin took the bowling honours during Yorkshire’s second innings as, despite a century from Richard Blakey, Glamorgan wrapped up victory by an innings and 52 runs inside three days.

Glamorgan’s victory at Leeds in 1999 remains as their sole victory in the County Championship at Headingley, with their other victories on Yorkshire soil coming at Harrogate in 1955, Sheffield (Bramall Lane) in 1957 and 1968, as well as at Middlesbrough in 1970 and 1993.
