Day 1

Morning Report

Despite a wet and cold morning, the weather cleared up right in time for play to start on Day 1 of the new season of the Rothesay County Championship. Shoaib Bashir and Asitha Fernando were handed their debut caps just before Sam Northeast went to the middle for the first toss of the season. Leicestershire skipper Peter Handscomb won the toss and decided to put the hosts to bat first. Zain ul Hassan and Eddie Byrom opened the innings for Glamorgan, but Sam Northeast soon found his way to the crease after Zain ul Hassan was dismissed in their second over of the morning. Northeast and Byrom batted together for an hour and saw off the new ball, playing some delightful strokes in the process, before Tom Scriven trapped the Glamorgan captain in front of the wicket. After a good start, Eddie Byrom edged Ben Green, on loan from Somerset, into the wicketkeeper's hands and walked off after scoring 41 runs. Kiran Carlson and Colin Ingram saw off the last few overs before lunch as the hosts reached 90/3 at lunch on Day 1.

Afternoon Report

It was wickets galore for Leicestershire bowlers on a green surface at Sophia Gardens, and the visitors made the most of the help. Kiran Carlson was the first one to depart, as he was bowled off a wonderful nip-backer from Ian Holland for 25. Colin Ingram, who crossed 9,000 first-class career runs, was shortly caught leg before wicket off the same bowler, who was Leicestershire's highlight of the afternoon. Chris Cooke ended the session on 29 not out batting with the lower-middle order batters. Shoaib Bashir came in at number 10 after Andy Gorvin was dismissed by Ben Mike. Glamorgan 181/8 at tea on Day 2.

Stumps Report

A 50-run partnership for the 9th wicket between Chris Cooke and Shoaib Bashir, courtesy of Cooke's amazing half-century, saw Glamorgan's total go past 200 in the first innings. With both being dismissed shortly after the tea break, Glamorgan bowlers had 19 overs to bowl at in the evening session. Despite a good start with an early wicket of Ian Holland by Timm van der Gugten, Leicestershire found batting against the new ball relatively easy. Asitha Fernando was tackled well by both Sol Budinger and Ben Mike, who came in no. 3. Andy Gorvin and Shoaib Bashir too bowled a few overs towards the end of day's play, but failed to provide a break through for the hosts. At the end of Day 1, Leicestershire are 64/1, trailing Glamorgan's first-innings score by 165 runs.

Day 2

Morning Report

A highly spirited start to the morning session, as Glamorgan bowlers kept their discipline on a sunny morning at Sophia Gardens. As Chris Cooke had said at the close to play on Day 1 that the wicket would flatten out on Day 2, the bowlers knew what they were up against, and ensured that the gave no free runs on the visiting batters. Asitha Fernando replaced Timm van der Gugten on the River End, and bowled a spell full of heart, pace and discipline. After beating the bat of Ben Mike and Lewis Hill multiple times, Fernando found success. A nip-backer to Ben Mike caught the night watch plumb in front of the wickets, and a sharp short-ball to opener Sol Budinger saw the left-hander top-edge high in the air, caught safely by Kiran Carlson at mid-wicket. Shoaib Bashir bowled a long spell from the Cathedral Road End, and despite bowling in tight areas, found no wicket to his name. Andy Gorvin and Zain Ul Hassan bowled a few overs before lunch, and continued the spirit that van der Gugten and Fernando showed on a flat-ish wicket.Leicestershire 166/3 at lunch at Day 2.

Teatime Report

After an amazing start to the afternoon session thanks to Lewis Hill and Peter Handscomb's 100-run partnership for the 4th wicket, Glamorgan pulled things back with three wickets in half an hour. Andy Gorvin was the star of the session with two long and miserly spells, also taking two tickets in the process. Ben Kellaway bowled his right-arm off-spinners towards the end of the session, and gave Leicestershire lower middle-order batters no room to free their arms. Sam Northeast produced a moment of individual brilliance with a sensational throw from mid-on, causing Lewis Hill to lose his wicket on 96. After the end of the afternoon session on Day 2, Leicestershire are 288/6, leading Glamorgan's first-innings total by 59 runs.

Stumps Report

Asitha Fernando and Timm van der Gugten took the second new ball, and even though the Sri Lankan Test cricketer picked up two quick wickets in the evening session, the final 32 overs belonged to the visitors. A remarkable 102-run not out partnership for the 9th wicket between Ben Cox and Chris Wright, effectively the final wicket given opener Rishi Patel's injury, gave Leicestershire a massive 197-run lead in the first innings. Captain Sam Northeast gave all his bowlers a go, but none could provide the final wicket. Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers on Day 2, with his 4-wicket spell keeping Glamorgan in the game. At the end of Day 2, Leicestershire are 426/8, leading Glamorgan's 1st innings total by 197 runs.

Day 3

Morning Report

Andy Gorvin wasted no time in picking up the remaining two wickets of the innings, as the right-arm medium pacer took the wickets of Ben Cox and Chris Wright in a span of 10 minutes. Leicestershire opener Rishi Patel, who had injured his thumb on the morning of Day 1 at slip, came in to bat at no. 11 to support Chris Wright's wonderful innings. Zain ul Hassan and Eddie Byrom walked in to open the 2nd innings for Glamorgan, but Leicestershire's American hero Ian Holland ensured that the hosts did not enjoy the morning session. After dismissing Zain ul Hassan and captain Sam Northeast in successive deliveries, he took Eddie Byrom's wicket towards the end of his amazing spell, when the left-handed opener hit a full-and-wide delivery straight to the hands of Rehan Ahmed at point. Colin Ingram too lost his wicket ahead of lunch, edging a Ben Green ball caught brilliantly by wicketkeeper Ben Cox. At lunch on Day 3, Glamorgan are 40/4 trailing by 158 runs.

Teatime Report

Kiran Carlson reached a major personal milestone in the afternoon session, going past 5,000 first-class runs for Glamorgan County Cricket Club. The red-ball vice-captain played a fighting innings to get to his half-century in an innings that saw him play some delightful strokes. Carlson played an expansive backfoot cut to Leicestershire quick Ben Mike over deep extra for six to get to his fifty, signalling his intent ahead of a long season. However, the visitors managed to pick up three wickets in the session, none bigger than that of Chris Cooke as the half-centurion from the first innings was LBW bowled by Ben Green. Ben Kellaway was trapped LBW to a Chris Wright delivery, who later went off injured halfway through his run-up. Timm van der Gugten, in an attempt to play a leg-side ball fine to the boundary, only managed to find Ben Cox's hand as Ben Mike celebrated his first wicket of the day. At tea, Glamorgan are 162-7, trailing by 36 runs.

Stumps Report

Kiran Carlson continued his form from the afternoon session to convert his half-century into Glamorgan's first century of the new season. Andy Gorvin supported the white-ball captain rather well, and went on to score his maiden half-century in first-class cricket. However, the party soon ended as Kiran Carlson top-edged a Ben Mike short-ball straight into the hands of substitute fielder Liam Trevaskis at deep-fine, ending an amazing knock of 113. Shoaib Bashir and Asitha Fernando offered less fight in the middle, and Glamorgan were all out for 248, with Andy Gorvin remaining not out for 50. In reply, Leicestershire took advantage of the extra half-hour available and sent in Rehan Ahmed with Sol Budinger to smash home the target of 51. So they did, in only 6 overs, the visitors managed to chase 51 as Glamorgan bowlers were hit to all corners of Sophia Gardens. Leicestershire won the first match of the season by 10 wickets.
