Glamorgan drew with Nottinghamshire on the final day of their LV=Insurance County Championship match against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens with the visitors set a notional target of 455 from a minimum of 105 overs, ending on 259-4 from 95.4 overs.
Day 1

Close of Play Report
Glamorgan were 224-7 when play resumed after tea with Michael Neser on-driving Liam Patterson-White before Andrew Salter did the same in the spinner’s next over. Neser also cover-drove Steve Mullaney for four before opening his shoulders and lofting Patterson-White to long-on for four as the 250 and another batting point came up in the 71st over.

But with the total on 257 Mullaney bowled Neser for 4. Having been joined by James Harris, Salter swatted Joey Evison through backward point for four before sweeping Patterson-White for four, followed by a lofted on-drive for six. The visitors then took the new ball as Fletcher and Hutton returned with Glamorgan a dozen runs away from a third batting point.

However, Harris cover-drove Fletcher for four before Salter glanced Hutton to fine-leg. Next ball though he miscued a pull into Haseeb Hameed hands at mid-wicket. Hogan then biffed the bowler for three before Harris pulled him to fine-leg for four to secure the point. Harris celebrated by drilling the next ball to the ropes at mid-wicket before cover-driving Hutton, but he then drove Fletcher into the hands of deep mid-on as Glamorgan’s innings ended on 318.

This left Nottinghamshire with nine overs to negotiate against the two Michael’s – Messrs Neser and Hogan – with Ben Slater steering Hogan through point for four before Haseeb Hameed on-drove Neser for four as they reached 19-0 by the close of play.

Teatime Update

Glamorgan had reached 103-3 when lunch was taken, with Sam Northeast and Kiran Carlson looking to consolidate after the interval as Dane Paterson and Steve Mullaney continued the bowling duties. Carlson square-drove Paterson before Northeast in his sublime way, steered the visiting captain through backward point for four to complete their half-century stand.

Northeast also pulled Paterson for four before Carlson greeted the return of Brett Hutton by off-driving the seamer for three. Northeast then off-drove Mullaney for four en route to a 75-ball fifty before Carlson, on 30, had a life as Clarke failed to cling onto an outside edge when Joey Evison returned at the Cathedral Road End. Later in the over, the young tyro gleefully found the ropes at third man again as he nurdled the all-rounder.

But with the total on 163 Northeast departed l.b.w. to Hutton as Billy Root joined Carlson. The latter flayed Hutton through backward point for four before Root secured an all-run four as he cover drove Hutton before guiding him to the ropes at backward point. Carlson however departed with the total on 180 as he edged Hutton to Matt Montgomery at second slip who parried the ball before lying prone on the ground caught the rebound.

Cooke became Root’s new partner as Luke Fletcher returned to the attack at the Cathedral Road End with Paterson coming back at the River End. Cooke cover-drove Fletcher for four but with the total on 193 Paterson found the edge of Root’s bat with Hutton at first slip completing a regulation catch. Michael Neser began by driving Paterson through backward point before Cooke cover-drove the South African to bring up the 200.

Neser square-drove Paterson for a pair of fours shortly before tea but with the total on 220, Mullaney replaced him and had Cooke caught behind.

Lunchtime Update

With Chris Cooke having recovered from a calf strain, Glamorgan welcomed back their first-choice wicket-keeper but in contrast, the East Midlands side were without their gloveman Tom Moores as well as Ben Duckett and James Pattinson, so it was Joe Clarke who was behind the stumps when Nottinghamshire opted to bowl first after winning the toss on a sweltering morning in the Welsh capital.

David Lloyd thick-edged Brett Hutton to the ropes at third man but in the third over he departed l.b.w. to Luke Fletcher. Ingram began with a nurdle to third man for four against Fletcher followed by a firm punch off the back foot through point, whilst Byrom drilled Hutton through mid-on for four. Dane Paterson then had a spell at the River End and beat the outside edge on Ingram’s bat before the southpaw drilled Fletcher to the boards at long-on, with the Protea then dispatching the next two deliveries through extra-cover.

Hutton then switched to the Cathedral End and was straight driven and cover driven for two further boundaries by Ingram as Glamorgan reached the 50-mark in the 11th over. Byrom celebrated by harpooning Paterson for six over mid-wicket but with the total on 62, Ingram sparred at a rising delivery from Hutton and feathered a catch into Clarke’s gloves. Sam Northeast announced his arrival with a straight-driven four against Hutton followed by a cover-driven boundary.

Byrom also square-drove Hutton but with the total on 76 he was trapped l.b.w. by Paterson as Kiran Carlson made his way to the middle. He began with a square-driven four against Paterson before Northeast greeted Joey Evison by drilling him through extra-cover. Carlson also cover-drove Evison for four, before Fletcher returned for a second spell shortly before lunch.

Day 2

Close of Play Report

Nottinghamshire were 250-4 when play resumed at 1620 after a short delay caused by rain during the tea interval with Glamorgan looking to hustle through to the new ball which was due in 8.1 overs after the break. But in the third over after the interval Steve Mullaney flicked Harris to deep backward square-leg where Eddie Byrom completed a good tumbling catch.

255-5 saw Liam Patterson-White join Matt Montgomery and he began by cover-driving and straight-driving Harris for four, but shortly afterwards, he miscued an on-drive and chipped a ball to Sam Northeast at short mid-wicket. 274-6 saw Joey Evison make his way to the middle as Glamorgan took the new ball with Michael Neser and Michael Hogan returning to the fray, with the latter striking with his first delivery as Evison feathered a catch down the legside into Chris Cooke’s gloves.

280-8 then became 284-8 as Montgomery inside-edged a ball from Neser onto his stumps, and then 285-9 as Luke Fletcher spooned a catch to Byrom in the covers. Three balls later the evergreen Australian bowled Dane Paterson as Nottinghamshire were dismissed for 285, having lost six wickets for 35 runs in 14.1 overs since tea.

Eddie Byrom and David Lloyd began the innings with 17 overs remaining in the day’s quota with the latter twice driving Fletcher for four through the covers. Brett Hutton was drilled through mid-off by Byrom who later square-drove Fletcher before lofting Paterson first bounce into the fence at mid-wicket. The assertive start continued as Lloyd cover-drove Fletcher before four byes in the penultimate over brought up the 50-stand.

Teatime Report

Haseeb Hameed had reached 66* when lunch was taken with Nottinghamshire on 130-1 after 40 overs. The opener was soon into his stride after the interval as he clipped James Harris to fine-leg, but next ball he shouldered arms to a delivery which darted back in and re-arranged his stumps. Joe Clarke became Montgomery’s new partner and he began with a series of deftly placed leg-side drives before clipping David Lloyd to the ropes at fine-leg but with the total on 155 he became Harris’ third victim as he was also bowled.

Lyndon James began with a pair of cover drives for four before Andrew Salter returned to the fray at the River End. Montgomery then pulled Harris for four before cover-driving Neser as he completed his maiden fifty with his seventh four. James also on-drove the Australian for four before lofting Salter for a straight six. He then hoisted Hogan for another maximum over square-leg before completing a 69-ball fifty.

Shortly before tea, Montgomery cover drove Salter but next over, and with the total on 233, their breezy stand ended as James edged Hogan into Lloyd’s hands at slip. Steve Mullaney replaced him and twice cover-drove Lloyd for four. A heavy shower then descended over the ground as the players departed for an early tea.

Lunchtime update

Last evening, just as the visitors began their innings, Bryan Adams, who was performing in Cardiff Castle, began his sound test with a rendition of the soundtrack from the film “Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves.” It remains to be seen whether the cricket team from Nottingham have stolen a march over the Welsh county by bowling first and dismissing them for 318, with opinion divided as to whether their total was an above or below par score.

All is likely to unfold today as the leaders of Division Two look to garner further bonus points with Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed resuming this morning on 19-0 against Michael Hogan and Michael Neser after a presentation as the players took to the field with Andrew Salter receiving his county cap. Slater twice pulled Neser for four, once in front and once behind square before cover-driving Hogan with aplomb. Light rain then started to fall as Hameed repeated the stroke against Neser to bring up the 50.

Hameed also greeted the introduction of James Harris into the attack by firmly cutting him square of the wicket before drilling successive balls from David Lloyd through the covers when the Glamorgan captain entered the attack at the River End. But with the total on 64, Harris bowled Slater as Matt Montgomery made his way to the middle for his first Championship innings with the debutant starting with a pair of square-driven fours against Harris.
Montgomery also straight-drove Lloyd before Hameed unfurled another high-class cover drive. Salter then entered the attack at the River End and was straight-driven for four by Montgomery. Hameed then completed his fifty by driving Salter to the mid-wicket ropes – his 85th delivery - before Neser and Hogan each had short bursts before lunch at the Cathedral Road End.

Day 3

Close of Play Report

Glamorgan had reached 302-4 at tea with a lead of 335 runs with Notts opting against taking the new ball and instead continuing with Liam Patterson-White’s left-arm spin and the military medium of Steve Mullaney. The two batters continued to quietly work the ball around until Northeast opened his shoulders and drilled the spinner for a four to long-on. He then plonked Mullaney over cow corner for six before pulling Patterson-White for four to complete a 96-ball fifty.

He celebrated by again driving Mullaney to deep mid-wicket for four before Root reverse-swept the spinner for four. Northeast then harpooned Patterson-White for six into the Grandstand with his show of aggression prompting the return of Luke Fletcher and Dane Paterson to the attack. The fifth wicket pair continued to find the gaps in the field as the lead went past 400.

Northeast then square-cut Paterson for four before on-driving his next delivery for a rasping boundary, followed by a coruscating cover drive for another four. Root completed his 50 from 83 balls before Northeast reached his hundred from 133 deliveries. Next ball, Root miscued an upper cut against Fletcher into Clarke’s gloves as Glamorgan lost their fifth wicket on 409 and a lead of 442.

Chris Cooke briefly joined Northeast for a couple of overs before Glamorgan declared at 1730pm leaving Nottinghamshire a target of 455 from a minimum of 105 overs. They made a poor start as Michael Hogan found the inside-edge of Haseeb Hameed’s bat as the opener was bowled by the last ball of the second over. Ben Slater then cover drove and pulled Neser for boundaries as the visitors ended the day on 19-1

Teatime Update

Colin Ingram joined Eddie Byrom as play resumed after lunch with Glamorgan on 172-1 and he was quickly into his stride as he drove Brett Hutton through the covers before nurdling Joey Evison to third man for another boundary. Byrom brought up the 200 as he flicked Hutton to fine-leg before pulling Dane Paterson for four.

Ingram then threaded another four through the covers as he drove Evison before Byrom again clipped Paterson to fine-leg. He then greeted the return of Liam Patterson-White to the attack by reverse-sweeping him for four, but with the total on 248, the spinner had Ingram caught behind the wicket as Sam Northeast joined Byrom. But it proved to be a brief partnership as the spinner struck again in his next over as Byrom was adjudged l.b.w. attempting another reverse-sweep.
253-3 saw Kiran Carlson make his way to the middle but nine runs later he edged Mullaney into Clarke’s gloves. Having been joined by Billy Root, Northeast straight-drove Mullaney for four as the lead went past the 300-mark. Root began by nurdling Patterson-White for four, followed next ball by a reverse-sweep for another boundary. In his next over, Root cover-drove the spinner for four before repeating the stroke two overs later.

Lunchtime update

Had it not been for matters relating to COVID, this game might have been staged at Colwyn Bay. Nevertheless, this round of Championship fixtures still has a couple of games at seaside grounds, with matches taking place at Southport and Scarborough. At the latter, the visiting attack was led by Worrall and Hardie, but it was at Cardiff where visiting supporters were yesterday heard muttering "Here's another fine mess" as Nottinghamshire’s batting collapsed after tea as the visitors lost six wickets for 35 runs in 14.1 overs.

During the final hour last night, David Lloyd and Eddie Byrom gleefully extended Glamorgan’s lead from 33 to 86 with the pair resuming this morning eager to build further on the advantage they had secured during the final session yesterday. Brett Hutton resumed the bowling and was immediately struck for two and four through the covers by Lloyd, before Byrom continued the assertive approach by striking successive deliveries from Dane Paterson to the ropes at extra-cover and wide long-on before nurdling him to third man.

Liam Patterson-White then entered the attack at the River End and was reverse-swept for four by Byrom as the opener reached his fifty from 86 balls. Luke Fletcher also had a spell at the Cathedral Road End and was glanced to fine-leg by Lloyd as the century stand came up in the 29th over. Byrom again reverse-swept Patterson-White for four before Lloyd drilled Fletcher through mid-off for another rasping boundary as the lead reached the 150-mark.

With Byrom accumulating mainly in singles, Lloyd completed his fifty from 103 balls by cutting Patterson-White, before Byrom drilled the spinner through mid-off for four before sweeping him to the boundary boards in front of the Grandstand. Byrom then lofted Patterson-White for a straight six before swatting Hutton for a pair of four as the 150 came up in the 41st over. He reached his century from 154 balls shortly before lunch by flicking Joey Evison to fine-leg. However, Lloyd was caught at slip from the final ball of the session as he edged Hutton to Montgomery.

Day 4

Close of Play Report

The visitors had reached 184-3 at tea with Joe Clarke unbeaten on 95 but he departed to the first ball of the session as he was caught behind playing forward to an exultant Kiran Carlson whose celebrations resembled those of the Welsh football team on qualifying for the World Cup. Having been joined by Steve Mullaney, Lyndon James completed his fifty from 132 balls as Colin Ingram and Andrew Salter hurried through to the new ball as the two Michaels – Hogan and Neser – returned for a final salvo with 25 overs remaining and Nottinghamshire on 221-4.

Mullaney survived a loud appeal for l.b.w. against Neser before edging him just short of first slip whilst James clipped Hogan to backward square-leg for four. Mullaney then survived a confident appeal for caught behind against Neser before James played another elegant square-cut for four against Hogan.
Harris and Lloyd then bowled in tandem, before Andrew Salter and Kiran Carlson returned but the fifth wicket pair remained resolute before the players and umpires shook hands with 9.2 overs remaining

Teatime Report

Nottinghamshire were 88-3 at Lunch, with Glamorgan pressing for the remaining seven wickets against the leaders of Division Two. Joe Clarke and Lyndon James faced the bowling combination of Michael Neser and James Harris. Clarke on-drove successive balls from Harris for four to end his sequence of maidens, before flicking him for a single to fine-leg to complete his fifty from 98 balls.

James dropped anchor at the other end as Michael Hogan returned to the fray at the Cathedral Road End, with Clarke punching him off the back foot through the covers for four. Colin Ingram then replaced Neser at the River End and was on-driven for four by both batters. Clarke also top-edged a cut against the wrist spinner which just evaded the fielder at backward point.

Andrew Salter then returned at the Cathedral Road End as Glamorgan switched to an all-spin attack. Clarke responded by cover-driving Ingram before on-driving Salter.

Lunchtime Report

Glamorgan are the only county, so far, during 2022 to defeat Nottinghamshire, the leaders of Division Two, and after another productive day yesterday, the Welsh county are in with a chance of doing it again, thereby completing a home and away double over the East Midlands side – something that they have only achieved three times before (1957, 1961 and 2005). Such a scenario had looked unlikely at teatime on the second day, but since then their bowlers and batters have bossed the game with Eddie Byrom and Sam Northeast completing chanceless hundreds yesterday as Glamorgan declared at 1730pm to leave the visitors with the stiff target of 455 from the remaining 105 overs.

Haseeb Hameed departed in Michael Hogan’s opening over and the veteran seamer was eager to make further inroads this morning, alongside James Harris, as Ben Slater and Matt Montgomery resumed on 19-1 and still with a mountain to climb on the wearing pitch where the odd delivery was also keeping low. Indeed, Harris struck with his second delivery as the umpire upheld an l.b.w. appeal against Montgomery.

Joe Clarke began with a rasping cover drive against Harris, followed by a firm on-drive against Hogan. Slater then cover drove successive balls from Harris before Michael Neser had a spell at the Cathedral Road End and was nurdled for four by Clarke to third man, before being clipped to square-leg by the same batter. Andrew Salter also entered the attack at the River End before Clarke off-drove Neser for four.

Slater also cover-drove Salter for four before steering David Lloyd through point for four. Shortly before lunch, Harris also returned at the Cathedral Road End with Colin Ingram’s leg-spin being employed at the River End. The latter made the breakthrough as after being cover driven for four by Slater, the opener chipped a ball back to the gleeful bowler.
