5 things to look forward to this summer!

25 Jan 2022 | Cricket

With the fixtures now released and summer approaching quickly, here’s our list of the key things to look out for in our 2022 fixture calendar at Glamorgan, including our defence of the Royal London Cup and a celebration of 20 years of Vitality Blast.

  1. 20 years of Blast

It may seem hard to believe, but the Vitality Blast celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and it's set to be another thrilling season of action-packed T20 cricket.

Glamorgan will play seven home matches across the group stages of the competition with our opening home game against Essex Eagles on Thursday, 2nd June, and our ‘Battle of the Bridge’ clash against Gloucestershire on Tuesday, 7th August, while our final home match is a blockbuster affair under the Friday night lights at Sophia Gardens against local rivals Somerset on 24th June, in 'The Big Match.'

Our Blast Pass T20 Season tickets is now on sale and you can watch all seven home matches for just £70. Buy HERE

  1. The return of Marnus and Neser

We welcome back Aussie superstars and Ashes winners, Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser back to Wales this year.

Labuschagne will make his return to Sophia Gardens as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world, after continuing his dominance at the number three position during the Ashes victory, as Australia climbed to the top of Test rankings.

Neser made his debut under lights in the 2nd Test at Adelaide, where he claimed his maiden Test victim, Haseeb Hameed early in the England innings. Neser took 24 wickets in five County Championship matches for the Welsh County in an extremely impressive debut season.

  1. England vs South Africa

Be sure not to miss out on our only International this summer as Eoin Morgan’s men take on a rejuvenated Proteas side on Thursday, 28th July.

England have a remarkable IT20 record in Cardiff and are undefeated in all eight matches they’ve played at the venue.

England are the number one ranked IT20 team, while South Africa are one of the powerhouses of the world game and contain some of the world’s best IT20 players in their ranks, including Quinton de Kock, Tabraiz Shamsi and Rassie van der Dussen.

  1. Our defence of the Royal London Cup

After last year’s epic win at Trent Bridge, we aim to defend our Royal London One Day Cup title.

Glamorgan clinched their first silverware for seventeen years by winning their first-ever final in 58 years of one-day cricket as they comfortably defeated Durham in front of a crowd of 7,200 at Nottingham.

Each county will play eight group-stage matches – four at home and four away – with the top three counties in each group progressing to the knockout stages.

Glamorgan will welcome some strong teams to South Wales, opening the competition against Kent on Thursday, 4th August, before facing Yorkshire then Lancashire and finishing their group stage campaign against Hampshire on Friday, 19th August.

  1. Glamorgan return to Neath

Glamorgan will play their first senior matches in Neath for 27 years, when we play two Royal London Cup fixtures at the Gnoll.

Neath was last used for a senior Glamorgan fixture in 1995, when the Welsh County drew with a powerful Young Australia side including the likes of Ricky Ponting, Matthew Elliott, Stuart Law, Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist and Michael Kasprowicz - who along with Elliott later played for Glamorgan and became firm fan favourites.

This year we welcome Lancashire on Wednesday, 17th August and Hampshire on Friday, 17th August.
