There will be a strong Glamorgan contingent at the inaugural England Players’ Dinner taking place at Lord’s on Tuesday evening with around 230 people attending, including those who have appeared in Test Cricket, One-Day Internationals, International Twenty20 matches, plus representatives from the women’s and disability teams.
The event, which is the brainchild of Andrew Strauss, the England Director of Cricket, will also be attended by Glamorgan President, Alan Jones who played for England in 1970 at Lord’s during their series against The Rest of the World.
The matches against the star-studded team had been arranged following the cancellation of the series with South Africa. At the time the games were awarded Test status, with Alan being presented with his England blazer and cap, before walking out through the famous Long Room with Kent’s Brian Luckhurst to opening the batting for England against the cream of international talent.
Although the series was subsequently stripped of its Test status in 1972, Alan has been invited to the event at Lord’s on Tuesday evening, with Andrew Strauss, in an interview with Steve James in ‘The Times’ newspaper , explaining why: “If he (Alan) walked out on to that field feeling like he was representing England in a Test Match – and that was certainly the way it was portrayed at the time – then we should recognise the fact that he has represented England.”
