Billy Root ‘loving it’ in Wales

New signing Billy Root is settling in well to life at Glamorgan after arriving from Nottinghamshire earlier this month.

The 26-year-old, who signed on a two-year deal, has already joined up with his teammates for their pre-season preparation and is enjoying his time in Wales.

“I’m loving it down here and the lads have been great,” said Root. “They made me feel really welcome as soon as I turned up. There’s also some really good golf down here so I can’t really ask for much more.”

The Sheffield-born left-hander averages 30-plus with the bat in all three formats of the county game, but joined Glamorgan to look for more first-team opportunities.

“I was at the point in my career where I felt like I was playing well but not getting much of an opportunity at Nottinghamshire. Glamorgan came at me and I thought I really wanted to go and take that challenge on.

“I had a second team game here just before the end of the season and the place really sold itself and it had a lot to do with the fact that I was really impressed with the way the one-day squad had been playing over the last two years and was really keen to get involved with that.”

Root has also been impressed with the talent within the squad and believes his new side can quickly turn around their disappointing Specsavers County Championship form.

“I think we can turn around things very quickly. Looking at the guys in the changing room in and around the squad there’s no reason why we can’t put out a really strong side and compete against anyone.

“The bowling looks as strong as any in Division One when fully fit and there’s a lot of skilful batters there as well so it’s exciting times.
