Here\'s a brief summary of the action from the Specsavers County Championship yesterday, as another set of fixtures got underway in glorious sunshine around the country.
DIVISION ONE
Durham v Lancashire -- Durham appeared to be wobbling slightly at 151/4 on the first day of this match at Chester-le-Street, but Scott Borthwick's first century of the season guided them to an imposing 341/6 at the close. Borthwick's partnership with Paul Collingwood was worth 123 and the former England all-rounder remains 85 not out as Durham seek maximum batting points.
Nottinghamshire v Warwickshire -- An astonishing turnaround involving Warwickshire's Chris Woakes and Keith Barker, who both hit centuries, saw the Bears recover from 17/4 and 60/5 to reach 372/9 at stumps at Trent Bridge. Luke Fletcher and Jackson Bird had decimated the visitors' top order before stand-in skipper Woakes led a gusty revival. He was eventually dismissed by Bird for 121 and Barker ousted by Harry Gurney for 113, leaving Warwickshire on top.
Somerset v Yorkshire -- Both Marcus Trescothick and Chris Rogers fell agonisingly short of centuries as Somerset's batsmen dominated proceedings on Day One. Yorkshire's seamers toiled in the Taunton sunshine, with only leg-spinner Adil Rashid causing the batsmen problems. Rashid accounted for both Trescothick and Rogers, but half-centuries from James Hildreth and Jim Allenby guided the hosts to 342/4 at the close.
Surrey v Middlesex -- A late flurry of wickets from the Surrey bowlers has left this match hanging in the balance after Day One. Earlier, an opening stand of 126 between Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins, as well as solid contributions from Dawid Malan and Adam Voges looked to have put Middlesex in the box seat. But back came Surrey, led by 21-year-old starlet Tom Curran who snaffled three wickets to leave the visitors 298/7 overnight.
DIVISION TWO
Essex v Derbyshire -- Another hundred from Essex's Nick Browne put the Division Two leaders in charge at Chelmsford after Derbyshire skipper Billy Godleman had opted to bowl first. Browne batted throughout the day to finish 154 not out and he was ably supported by Ravi Bopara (49) and Dan Lawrence (51 not out). Essex, now 284/3, will look to secure maximum batting points and put Derbyshire under pressure today.
Northamptonshire v Kent -- Former England ODI opener Joe Denly anchored Kent's first innings with his first hundred of the season and the visitors can consider themselves slighly ahead after the first day at Wantage Road, ending the day 300/7. Denly remains unbeaten on 126, yet no other Kent batsman passed 50. Monty Panesar took 2/94 on his Northants return.
Worcestershire v Sussex -- The home side have the advantage after the first day of this clash between two Division Two promotion hopefuls. All of Worcestershire's top six got starts, with Brett D'Oliveira carrying on his imperious form scoring 99 before falling to the leg spin of Luke Wells. Joe Clarke also continued his rich vein of runscoring by notching 82, also dismissed by Wells. Worcestershire ended the day 382/4.
