Cricket in Cardiff - A History: Talk in the Museum of Welsh Cricket

28 Sep 2015 | Cricket
The history of cricket in Cardiff is the theme for the first talk in the programme of events for 2015/16 in the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket at Glamorgan's headquarters at the SSE SWALEC on Wednesday, September 30th at 7.30pm.
The evening will see Glamorgan CCC's Archivist and Museum Curator Andrew Hignell trace the origins of cricket in the Welsh capital during the 19th century, besides exploring the involvement of the local landowners, especially the Marquess of Bute who provided land for the creation of Cardiff Arms Park, where Glamorgan played their first-ever inter-county match in 1889, as well as in Sophia Gardens where the Club have subsequently established their base and created a Test Match venue.

Andrew will also explore the reasons for the Marquesses involvement in promoting healthy recreation in Cardiff during the late Victorian era, besides looking at the evolution of cricket in other parts of the Welsh capital city including Canton and also Llanishen where the Bute Estate were less than supportive of encouraging cricket.

Cricket in Cardiff - a history will commence in the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket at 7.30pm on the evening of Wednesday, September 30th, whilst the Museum will also be open that evening from 6.45pm, allowing people to view the other exhibits in the Museum.
