Croft reflects on One-Day Cup Campaign

Head coach Robert Croft has praised his team\'s fight in finishing the Royal London One-Day Cup with two dramatic victories to end the competition with four wins from eight games.

The Welsh County won a thriller against Hampshire on Friday before defeating Kent by 15 runs in a run fest at St. Helen’s last Sunday.

Glamorgan saw their hopes of making the top three in the South group fade with inconsistent performances, most notably piping Essex by one run then crucially losing a winnable match at Radlett to Middlesex.

That meant that high-scoring victories over Hampshire in Southampton and Kent in Swansea could not propel them into the knock-out stages, as although 8 points had been sufficient for quarter-finals progress in previous years, with only three teams from each group going on to the knockout rounds, qualification was more competitive than ever.

"We left the competition with some respectability and I think that was crucial," Croft said.

"It is disappointing for us and the fans not to see us move forward but bouncing back from the disappointment against Middlesex by the way we played against Hampshire and Kent has been a show of resilience, a show of character and high skill.

Batsman Colin Ingram recorded his third century in four games against Kent, keeping him top of the competition's run-scorers with 564, while there were career-best performances from home-grown players Will Bragg, with 94, and David Lloyd, taking five wickets for 53 runs.

New signing Marchant de Lange ended the group stage as the joint highest wicket taker in the competition with 18 wickets.

"Everyone knows what Colin has done, but the beauty is that he keeps doing it,” added Croft.

"Will Bragg coming back into the team has added steel at the top of the order, [teenager] Kiran Carlson with the bat, Marchant de Lange with the ball.

“Even with the disappointment of defeat, we're starting to get some young talent exposed to this level of competition with Kiran Carlson, Lukas Carey, Aneurin Donald, and Dave Lloyd getting five wickets after a tough time.

"As well as our senior players, we've also got some younger Welsh players getting exposed who are also showing what they can do."
