Derbyshire v Glamorgan: LVCC Head-to-Head

25 Apr 2022 | Cricket

Glamorgan travel to Derby for their next contest in the LV=Insurance County Championship with the four-day game at Derbyshire’s headquarters scheduled to start at 11.00am on Thursday, 28 April (writes Andrew Hignell).

The Welsh county were victorious on their most recent visit to Derby in 2019 for a County Championship match as their batters, set a target of 246 in 87 overs, saw them to a two-wicket victory with Tom Cullen and Andrew Salter each playing key roles after Lukas Carey and Dan Douthwaite had each claimed four-wicket hauls.

It had been a very different story in September 2018 when a ten-wicket haul by Tony Palladino guide Derbyshire to a 169-run victory. Glamorgan had opted to bowl first on the green-tinged surface but Billy Godleman rode his luck in his team’s first innings before the seam and swing of Palladino saw him scythe his way through the visiting line-up, with only Chris Cooke offering any lengthy defiance.

The match in 2017 at Derby proved to be a soggy affair with a combination of rain and a saturated outfield seeing just a couple of sessions of play on the third day. The weather also played a role as well in 2016 with snow, sleet and hail interrupting proceedings as the contest ended all-square.

In all, Glamorgan have won nine of their 39 matches at Derby with three of their victories – 2003, 2006 and 2019 – coming this century. Their success sixteen years ago at Derby was also set up by a superb 233 by Mark Cosgrove, with the Australian’s muscular efforts remaining as the highest score at the former racecourse by a Glamorgan batter. As far as bowling performances are concerned, the return of 12/113 by left-arm spinner Frank Ryan in the contest in 1930 remain the best-ever match figures by a Glamorgan bowler at Derby.
